I actually had trouble the first time I first saw this question but now I understand, all you have to do is decompose each symbol at the top, then move those parts along a certain diagonal.

You can guess what part move along wich diagonal by checking the two elements following in a single diagonal a symbol.

Pic related.

Broke down the symbol in 1 into a single part, this part move along two diagonals the one following (1-5-9) and the one following (1-6-8).

Now broke down the sybol in two into two different part, on consisting of the line at the top and the one at the bottom of the rectangle, and another one consisting of the line at the sides of said rectangle.

You move the up and down component along the diagonal (2-6-7) and the one with the sides along (2-4-9).

Finnaly the figure in 3 can be broken down into two as well, one line at the top of the symbol and another one looking like the one in 1 turned upside down.
You move the line along (3-5-7) and the other component along (3-4-8).

Every time two component fall in the same case they merge with each other to create a new one.

9 is the merging of the sides of the rectangle and the the symbol in 1, wich gives a M (D).

There are many ways to get a high score like memorizing the patterns, being lucky with the questions... and having all those things you've listed doens't imply success in research or entrepreneurship an so on because in order to use mental skills effectively you need some huge amount of creativity and out of the box thinking too which are both not measured in an IQ test.

IQ doesn't encompass all of intelligence and is often clung to by creativ-lets since IQ doesn't measure creativity. Yet it does still measure a portion of intelligence validly.

IQ tests also say I have a bad memory yet I've long mogged others by recalling obscure shit so this seems to be inaccurate somehow... I seem to struggle being told to memorize something specific and recalling it... but memorize and recall a ton of shit spontaneously. I did the block design portion of the IQ test faster than anybody the examiner had ever seen but I still got very little weighting for that.

IQ tests seems pretty lousy at gauging intelligence among people with mental illnesses specifically. E.G. Kim Peek was actually pretty dumb in a lot of ways but in other ways the biggest brain around but his IQ was decently below average.

Having a low or high IQ means just that. You have a low or high IQ. There's more to intelligence than IQ but if IQ isn't treated as valid at all you basically can't trust anything psychiatry or psychology says because it's all bigger bullshit than IQ.

To use a specific example - I wasn't very good at school but I'm pretty much a chad at my job. I'm utter shit at being told to do a specific task and then accomplishing that task. If you put me to the test I tend to crumble. I wasn't BAD at school my IQ is still above average but I did worse than expectations.

Yet at work I'm one of the most creative employees so I'm always building new solutions and developing new tools and whatnot so my productivity is through the roof. I can easily outperform those as intelligent as me in terms of IQ simply because they struggle when not being told what to do. Yet if we're competing to accomplish a specific narrowly defined task I'll probably get beaten. It tends to take employers awhile to realize my nature but when they do they just leave me alone and I just shit out work.

you have to think of certain characteristics as appearing AT MOST once in each row and column. One characteristic is parallel horizontal lines. We can see those are already at b1, c2 and a3. So we can assume the figure wont have parallel horizontal lines, which rules out A, B and F. Another characteristic is an upward arrow. These are at c1, a2, and b3, so we can rule out C. This leaves D and M. From D and M we can rule out that we should look for downward arrows since they both have these. We can also rule out looking for parallel vertical lines as they both have these as well. We can rule out E because that would cause a single horizontal line to appear more than one in column c. As a corollary we can see that representation of vertical parallel lines is desired both in column c and row 3. Therefore the answer is D.

>> No.10980964

Iv'e never gotten why people brag about IQ and success in life. IQ will surely help you academically, but in life it doesn't mean much (unless you are mentally retarded).

Most upper management i have met in the past 3 years since graduating are retards and yet make about 7 times more than people with math/science from prestigious universities.

I have met five people in my life who make anywhere between £500,000 - £5 million a year and not one single one of them had a degree, they all did niche apprenticeships and started their own businesses.

Pretty sure most executives at businesses aren't the brightest among us. Pretty sure the majority of celebrities aren't geniuses either.

Success in life comes down to luck, understanding people, and being great at pulling strings that make people tick - having just one of these is rare, having two of these inconceivable, and having luck is just down to randomness.

It's a sad truth, but unless you are a literal genius, your IQ won't make any significant impact on your life. You will graduate university and work among people with average IQ's in some shitty desk job, or worse is that you work with retards.

I hate talking about IQ. I was tested once, because they thought I was retarded and they told me my intelligence is "above average". After browsing /fit/ for a while I did an IQ test getting 135. So I'm not a brainlet. I won't criticise IQ I'll just write about my thoughts.

We live in a society where intelligence is highly valuable. Being stamped down as dumb is almost a death sentence. Imagine just getting an IQ of 80 wich is the reallity of many. You won't have a good job, your children will be dumb too - good luck finding a good wife. It does not matter how hard you work, this value won't change.
I hate having high IQ. It takes all the value of my efforts. Doesn't matter if I teach myself to draw or how to play an instrument. The hard work goes to nothing as this is to be expected. With high IQ it just feels like you cannot succeed, just fail.

So fuck IQ. I hope all the research on it will be disproven and that your intelligence is in reallity mostly dynamic and can be trained.

Also.

My IQ as a senior in highschool was 141. That should have suggested that I had a bright future ahead of me. Surely I had potential to "really do something with my life". I got accepted into a pretty prestigious college doing computer animation. I didn't go for several reasons, the knowledge of extreme debt being one, having this sweet piece of pussy right down the road being the other. It turns out I'm as average as anyone else. I dream big, aisee patterns in all sorts of things, perhaps where there none. I have a mild delusional psychosis which I cannot shake.

I'm a complete outlier in my family. They are all average to below-average intelligence. They're also religious fundamentalists which was also a big hamper on any extra curricular education. I'm 33 now and my biggest regret in life is growing up with no mentors, a mere product of public education. Noone to guide me in any particular direction. I've just meandered through life.

Hello /sci/ I am interning at a middle school as a sub teacher and I want to explain 7th graders how to derive the quadratic formula.
What do you think? Is this clear enough for them to get the main idea? (It is an AP algebra class). I made this derivation myself since a typical derivation you find on the web is too cryptic and doesn't explain the main idea well.

Problem: derive the solution of the quadratic equation [math]ax^2 + bx + c.[/math]
Our derivation is based on the identity: [math](a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2 \qquad (1)[/math]
Any quadratic equation can be transformed to the following form:
[math](x + m)^2 = d \qquad (2)[/math].
Why is it important? Because m and d are constants and we have to solve for just one unknown variable x by taking the square root on both sides:
[math]x + m = \pm \sqrt{d}[/math]
[math]x = -m \pm \sqrt{d}[/math]
Let's consider a simple example [math]x^2 + 6x + 5 = 0[/math]
How dow we convert it to the identity (1)? Well we can first re-write it as
[math]x^2 + 2\cdot x\cdot 3 + 5= 0[/math]
Notice the second term looks like the second term in (1) so b=3. But obviously [math]b^2[/math] then needs to be 9. So we can add 4 to both sides of the equation:
[math]x^2 + 2\cdot x\cdot 3 + 5 + 4 = 4[/math]
[math]x^2 + 2\cdot x\cdot 3 + 3^2 = 4[/math]
[math](x + 3)^2 = 4[/math]
This is the same as form (2). We can now solve it:
[math]x +3 = \pm \sqrt{4}[/math]
[math]x = -3 \pm 2[/math]
[math]x=-1, x=-5[/math]
Now we can apply the same technique to solving the general equation [math]ax^2 + bx +c = 0[/math]. We first divide by a:
[math]x^2 + \dfrac{bx}{a} + \dfrac{c}{a} = 0[/math]
Now we take [math]\dot{b} = \dfrac{b}{a}, \dot{c} = \dfrac{c}{a}; \qquad[/math] And the equation becomes:
[math]x^2 + \dot{b}x + \dot{c} = 0[/math]
Let's add a certain unknown number [math]d[/math] to both sides:
[math]x^2 + \dot{b}x + \dot{c} + d = d[/math]

>> No.10987397

Let's rewrite it as
[math]x^2 + 2x(\dfrac{\dot{b}}{2}) + \dot{c} + d = d[/math]
To convert it to identity (1), we need to make sure
[math]\dot{c} + d = \left(\dfrac{\dot{b}}{2}\right)^2 \qquad(3)[/math]
Then we can rewrite our equation as
[math]x^2 + 2x\left(\dfrac{\dot{b}}{2}\right) + \left(\dfrac{\dot{b}}{2}\right)^2 = d[/math]
[math]\left(x + \dfrac{\dot{b}}{2}\right)^2 = d[/math]
[math]x = - \dfrac{\dot{b}}{2} \pm \sqrt{d}[/math]
Now we get [math]d[/math] from (3):
[math]d = \left(\dfrac{\dot{b}}{2}\right)^2 -\dot{c} = \dfrac{\dot{b}^2}{4}-\dot{c}[/math]
[math]x = - \dfrac{\dot{b}}{2} \pm \sqrt{\dfrac{\dot{b}^2}{4}-\dot{c}}[/math]
And unwinding our substitutions:
[math]x = - \dfrac{b}{2a} \pm \sqrt{\dfrac{b^2}{4a^2}-\dfrac{c}{a}}[/math]
[math]x = - \dfrac{b}{2a} \pm \sqrt{\dfrac{b^2}{4a^2}-\dfrac{4ac}{4a^2}}[/math]
[math]x = - \dfrac{b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}[/math]

Yeah, not quite. IQ measures really specialized skills who don't say much about someone's intelligence beyond the retard threshold. The vast majority of high performing students have never taken an IQ test, so the correlation with their IQ and shit like grades or SAT score tells too little.
Reducing the cognitive ability of someone who's got above average intelligence to IQ is like reducing someone's mathematical prowess to how many pi digits they can recall. If you can't remember 3.14 you are probably not very bright. But if you are able to know the 200th digit you could either be smart, have good long term memory or just be an idiot savant. Given that, no one could say anything about you being able to understand something like, say, Topology.
