Why don't photons have mass despite having energy?

>> No.10853997

Mass equals energy, so photons only need one part.

>> No.10854000

>>10853992
Because they possess no Higgs bosons and no propensity to couple to the Higgs field unless they acquire some by interacting with other energetic photons and converting to massive matter.

someone correct me if I'm wrong but aren't photons the purest form of energy in the cosmos, thats why they don't "need" mass? and this is also the reason why they can travel at light speed while something else with mass can't?

"Pair production", the typical example being when a high energy photon interacts with some matter and becomes an electron and positron, or alternatively when two photons collide in the absence of matter and do the same (electron-positron annihilation in reverse).

thats why I said photons are basically the purest form of energy...because they don't have mass they act in multiple phenomena at a fundamental level

>but nothing emits light, a camara is not collecting anything , a wave is not a thing...

well you see little timmy, even newton and tesla proposed that light (and the electron in teslas case) was a corpuscle, multiple moving corpuscles creates a frequency of corpuscles and if this corpuscles have enough frequency between each other we can detect them with our eyes but if they go too high in frequency our eyes are not prepared to detect them anymore.

yes, "corpuscles" of light are emited, little timmy, but their behaviour is special because they are massless so you won't get them "collected in your camera"

Why should they have mass? All mass is energy, but not all energy is mass. E=mc^2 tells you the energy associated with some mass. It doesn't mean that every energy corresponds to some mass.

>> No.10854499

If they had mass they couldn't travel at the speed of light.

>> No.10854664

>>10853992
Aren't photons literally light? So of course they travel at the speed of light since they are light?

>> No.10854671

>>10853992
every test of the photon's mass has an upper limit that has been gradually decreasing

we need light to travel at c in order for relativity to work

since photons are what makes up light, we model them as massless particles in accordance with relativity and what we observe

if photons had a positive mass, then all it would mean is that they wouldn't travel at c, and the electromagnetic force would lose strength over large distances. maxwell's equations would need to be adjusted slightly. it wouldn't change the universal speed limit of c, though.

>> No.10854674

>>10854497
do you know what an equal sign means?

E = mc^2 is the same as m = E/c^2 and we can now say that every mass corresponds to some energy divided by c^2.

photons have energy without mass

>> No.10854726

>>10854674
That equation is only valid in a massive object's rest frame. The full, general equation is E^2 = (mc^2)^2 + (pc)^2

For a massive object's rest frame this reduces to E=mc^2, and for a massless object this reduces to E=pc.

>> No.10854794

>>10854726
This. Photons have energy and momentum but zero mass. QED says that the force carrier must be a massless boson particle which is exactly the photon.
