And that's a looooong way off. As for the geopolitics, of course the Alzheimer's Clown In Chief probably doesn't remember how much prestige the unprecedented Viking and Voyager images won for the US after Apollo. Never mind the self-contradiction of being for and against re-development of the means for manned flight to the moon as a step toward making it happen on Mars. No, you absolute moron, no person beyond the 5th grade actually believes that Trump L-I-T-E-R-A-L-L-Y thinks the Moon and Mars are part of one another. It's the absolute absurdity that the president of the United States of America (an office which includes the likes of FDR, Thomas Jefferson, Richard Nixon, JFK, etc.---that is to say, intelligent persons) would even write something so incredibly dumb that it COULD be insinuated that they are part of one another.

Is it that hard to figure out that he meant talking about the Moon as the major achievement instead of Mars? In other words, instead of framing returning to the moon as the major end goal, it should be seen as part of a larger plan to get to Mars.

>> No.10715143

>>10710947
The reason Trump is shitting on NASA's "le lets return to the moon" is because its a tiny brained vision. NASA lacks vision. That's the problem. Imagine if NASA said, fuck it, we'll go to both Mars/Moon by 2024. We'll fund $1B a year to SpaceX until 2024 to get Mars cargo missions(2 rides). SpaceX will have had 80-100% of their development budget paid off and would instead focus primarily on development as fast as possible. Lets say SLS gets man on moon by 2024 but at the same year, SpaceX gets to Mars landing. NASA wins both ways, Trump is willing to fund NASA for such a project. But NASA doesn't have the balls to push limits, they don't have the balls to boundaries. If SpaceX succeeds, it would mean SLS would be cancelled. That's the huge problem for NASA. $1 billion per year for SpaceX is NOTHING compared to what NASA has spent so far for SLS and what NASA will spend till 2024 every year. By 2024, they would have spent ~$50 billion on SLS.

>> No.10715156

To be fair, after decades of being restricted by Congress and constantly having ambitious projects canceled by child-minded presidents, it makes sense that NASA isn't willing to push the limits and only do what gives a steady budget and guaranteed relevancy.

>> No.10715165

>>10715146
He worded it bit weird, but its mainly the press creating the fake news scenario. If you read his whole tweet, anyone with a brain would realize he's talking about wanting NASA to have a bigger vision than simply the Moon. He specifically wants Mars to be JUST as high priority. I get it that NASA's own internal projection shows that no vehicle is capable of it today until 2030s-2040s, but they should really take a look at what commercial space industry is doing instead of plugging their ears in and saying "LALALALA Starship is not real, New Glenn is not real."

In someways, its understandable given that this is purely a political play to keep Boeing and SLS alive, but on the other hand, this is corruption, stagnation and everything wrong with current NASA that people see today. This is what Trump sees but doesn't outright say it, but he's implying it.
