Are there people who actually use a pronoun to describe a person in a scientific paper? That sounds like it's stylistically terrible. In any case, the singular "they" just kind of comes out naturally when I have to do this, or I somehow try to use "one." I never think about using "he" or "she." What a strange thing to get hung up on.
