Humans are meant to walk/move. Because of this, driving to locations is obviously not as healthy as walking, meaning cities are better to live in for the human body.

But are there any advantages to suburbs? I'm talking actual advantages that are beneficial to humans, not just "oh you get a nice back yard."

Not sure if this is the right board, but I feel like any other board would get into the preference part of it and not the actual science behind which is better.

OP here. I should also mention that humans are social creatures and thus city living would still be better. I'm still wondering though if there are any objective human advantages to suburban living.

Societal yes, but not at the densities of cities. It is thought that above roughly 100 people per community starts breeding "cheating" behavior.

Living space is an actual advantage. Even rural houses where working class red necks live are of similar size to apartments. I come from one of the poorest rural areas in my state and I’m living in one of the richest cities.

In the suburbs its normal to know all the neighbors on your street, have block parties, etc. and a strong sense of community (assuming your 'burb is mostly racially homogeneous).
In a dense city, most people don't even speak to their neighbors and barely know what they look like.

As population density increases, there is greater variance in lifestyles, etc. Cities are fundamentally more efficient than less dense areas, so people who are have unusual lifestyles and desire are more productive, leading to even more efficiency for those who are among the norm. Most everyone in those scenarios leads to a more productive and self-fulfilling state. The more effective state of outliers though dose pre-dispose some normal people to higher stress levels. Basically you transfer some stress from outliers into the center. It's not surprising there's greater risk of mental illness, by both improving the conditions of naturally at-risk people, and creating a scenario where there's more room for competition and greater disparity across the board.

tl;dr I want to live like that. I have a 26+ hour cycle and I use 24-hour stores and laundromats. I'm also a BS in Electrical Engineering. I am a product of human deviancy given some chance to excel.

I live in the suburbs and I walk 3 blocks to the library every day. Sometimes I run instead of walk and sometimes I make two or three round trips.

I've even walked and ran four miles to a library from a neighboring suburb. Again, double that distance for the return trip. Therefore, one can be athletic in the suburbs if they choose to.

Before going to the library, I use to run laps on a hill. Not quite as fun as running 18 floors up a skyscraper, which I did in the city, but is sufficient exercise to prevent a heart attack.

I live in the state with the second most public parks. Plenty of places to run. Both the city and suburbs have plenty of parks. The main difference is that parks in the city have more people.

Lastly, as far as I know, there aren't any suburbs with parks that have a table that doubles as a chess board. This contrast is part of the broader contrast of cities being more social than suburbs. The extensive usage of cars in suburbs is perhaps the most anti-social behavior of all.

Locals know that same guy asked them for money every day this week and every day he hadn't eaten in 3 days or needed $0.63 for the bus so you'll take all your money out. Humans are poorly adapted to living in large cities; for the vast bulk of human history (outside the relatively brief time between the invention of modern sanitation & reliable birth control) cities have been population sinks, with more people dying in them than being born.

Cities need a constant inflow of people from more rural areas to maintain their population. In the past, this was caused by the high disease rates in cities; today living conditions in cities make people want few kids, which reliable birth control enables.

Suburbs to me strike a reasonable compromise between the economic benefits of living in/near a city, while still allowing for sustainable birthrates. All the fancy walkable cities in the world are pretty pointless if your society ends up with unsustainably low birth rates.

Yep, crazy isn't it? And urbanization is one of the major drivers of this shift. Now, of course I know that the total population on Earth can't grow forever, and that for quality of life reasons stopping it where it is, or even letting it decline a bit in densely populated countries may be ideal.

So I think replacement level should be the goal, and should be accounted for when urban planning is being done. Any society that doesn't replace itself will be replaced by another, but too high of a population growth causes its own issues, in trying to build up infrastructure and source food & water.

Daily reminder that constant exposure to electromagnetic radiation is the number 1 factor of drastically reduced sperm quality of modern day western males (Other factors are naturally xenoestrogens in foods and plastics and inactive lifestyles). This effect has been tested with rats in controlled environment with radiation levels equivalent to transmitting cellphone at 1 meter distance. Close proximity to wi-fi hotspots is even worse and 5G is something that should never happen.

Exposure to electromagnetic fields also always results in oxidative stress and there are a plethora of studies how oxidative stress affects your health.

Living in a city is the dumbest thing you can do. If you have to live in a suburb, paint your house with electromagnetic shielding paint and ground it. Also dont use "smart phones" and keep wireless devices to absolute minimum.
