I don't see any reason why a person that is bad at math could not be intelligent.

Not being interested is not the same as being bad. Smart people usually can do fine with most things, they jist don't have to like everything.

Yes, intelligence isn’t based on being good at math. Dare I say, just look at early engineers or early humans. They didn’t have to be good at math yet they accomplished many a thing using their intellect and willpower

Don’t let these anons get ya down, math has just become the poster child of being smart, when half of the people on here probably won’t employed.

I started hating math back when I was in middle school because the teachers were bad and made it look like a bunch of useless bullshit they'd have to drill into our heads. I'm not sure if my poor matg skills come from that or just from being genuinely stupid.

What makes you think philosophy majors are bad at math?

>> No.9840225

>>9840213
No. Go talk to any philosophy major and you'll se that, although they suck at math, they're good at logic, which means they would be good at math if they wanted. Besides, just look at your fucking image.

>> No.9840241

>>9840225
I dunno I don't struggle with logic at all but big math symbols make me dizzy. I can learn math but I need to put in a lot of work to keep track of big nasty equations and it takes conscious effort to break them down. But I have pretty good geometric intuition and can reason verbally no problem.

They really arent besides syllogism memes and makibg tedious, but ultimately vacuous arguments. Most logicians are mathematicians.

Was the same (kept being moved between international schools by boomer oil & gas parents) - finally settled for final few years of school and learned the whole school curriculum in under a year (which isnt hard desu because most of it is the same) - only struggle was physics.

Now doing maths degree at top 20 uni

never give up anon

>> No.9840296

Smart people should be able to learn math if they wanted to. The secret is that real math doesn't start until college, so you might think math sucks if all you've ever taken is high school math.

Charlies Darwin is a gifted theorist who wrote his famous out of Africa theory. He hired a tutor to teach him Algebra but dismissed the tutor. He thought Algebra was boring. He had to hire his cousin to do the math work for his biology work.

Some people are demonstrably worse at reading comprehension, and those that read a book but understand none of it can be said to be "reading the book wrong" compared to someone who read it, understood it, and retained the information.

Motivation is one of the biggest factors that lead to excellence. If you're intelligent but not interested in math at all, then of course you won't be very good at it. That doesn't necessarily make you stupid. However, it is true that a high percentage of people that are good at math are intelligent. It's a branch of study that happens to appeal to many intellectuals.

Depends on what you mean by being "bad at math". If by that you mean, being bad at doing algebra and computations (eg. Calculus) then yes because being good at those things merely requires practice with the algorithms and knowing the theorems. I don't consider that math though.

If by being "bad at math" you mean real math, then no, because, at least for me, being smart is defined by your ability to solve problems and have insight with the tools you are given. Math is about solving problems with your set of tools and understanding abstract concepts.

The reason why people have trouble in advanced mathematics (on a relative undergraduate level) is because they had a poor foundation. It is a compounding subject that requires every prior library of information; You simply cannot integrate without knowing how to derive, and before that you cannot effectively derive if you are not very good at algebra. It is common for an otherwise naturally intuitive person to have a poor highschool or middleschool experience and therefore have difficulties in math.

If a person hasn't studied much math, then they are bad at math (unless they're Ramanujan who comes up with everything by himself). This is not to say that they couldn't be good at math if they studied it. For example, I never cared to learn how to swim, so I'm obviously bad at swimming. But I could be OK at swimming if I started to learn it.

So yes, you can be smart but bad at math.
