It was maybe three months ago. I was asking about topoi and duality. I recall committing the fallacy of thinking that Top was a topos because it is an (infinity,1)-topos, and she gently pointed out my mistake. It should all be in the archives; it was in a thread I had started. Not sure if I was namefagging at the time. We talked a bit on Isbell Duality, because I think constructing spectra is too sterile and needs a change, but she disagrees on that point I guess.

Satan speaks. yeah, Transfinite Turing machines have also their own halting problem unsolvable
within their own transfinite Turing machines. I wish more people out there studied this stuff, but most CS people interested in "computability" actually study computational complexity and I found people moving from pure computational complexity to applications within economics and geometry.

There's a really pretty Greek probability PhD student at my university.

I'm a 3rd year undergrad but I'm 24 because I didn't go to uni straight away after highschool

She lead an examples class every couple of weeks in one term and we kind of give nods/ smiles of recognition when we walk past but I'm pretty sure she only does that because she feel socially obliged to.

I'm thinking of emailing her and asking if I could discuss a problem with her then try and get her number.

Can you guys think of any better ideas? The only other thing I might have a chance of socialising with her naturally at would be if I randomly turned up to a postgraduate guest talk or something that she turned up to, but that would probably seem pretty affected since I haven't even done measure theory yet.
The only other thing I can think of would be just straight up trying to ask if she'd like to get coffee the next time I walk past her in September, but I think the probability of that working is low since we haven't really said anything apart from when I asked questions in the class.

Do any of you have any ideas for getting close to a PhD student when you're undergrad and your only history of interaction is answering maths questions in teaching seminars and subsequent nods/passing smiles of recognition in hallways?

>> No.7470947

Greek girls are snob as fuck. Basically you have to be an alpha male and have really high confidence to draw their attention.

Don't email her. Just talk to her at lunch.

>> No.7470952

>>7470929
The coffee plan is best. Either she does or doesn't like you based off your looks and intelligence.

Actually planning ways to get with a girl is retarded in my experience. You gotta be direct.

There isn't one big cafeteria or anything.

>>7470952
Tbh fam I think I would have more success if I got to talk to her during the nibbles after a maths talk or something.

Going straight up to her the next time I see her in a corridor and making like 5 lines of small talk before asking for her number and coffee is basically asking her to make her judgment based on my looks alone.

After a maths talk it would be quite easy to get like 3 or 4 minutes of small talk with her , naturally before I ask for her number.

>> No.7471032

It's gonna be obvious as fuck if you small talk her 3-4 mins after the class smh. You better be direct or else she's gonna cringe thinking about you every day she sees you fam

I don't think you're imagining it right. Don't worry dude either way my odds will be at least as high as just walking up to her the next time I see her in a hallway.

If she is your TA don't try to hit on her. There is a professional line there so don't cross it. Find some other hot grad student and ask them out (but not over email, do it in person).

I haven't had much luck in dating fellow math students/grad students. Usually someone outside your field will be better, you guys will be different enough to be interesting.
