Boat was too close to launch site, had to wait for them to leave

Ground wind was over a certain amount

A thing not closing properly when they aborted due to wind, didn't close because it didn't build up enough pressure to be closed

Core overheated, probably because they keep turning it off and on, cooled it with secondary measure

Well you have to take into account that the planets also rotate in different speeds around the sun. You can't just aim at Mars and fly straight because when you're there it's already gone. Luckily we can predict the location of the planets using simple Newtonian physics.

It takes about 4-5 months with the best rockets today to reach mars. But that's only when Mars is closest to the Earth, which gives us a ~7 month window. And that moment only happens every ~2 years.
So if we want to send people to mars we have 2 options:
- Reduce the flight time to 3 months and basically do a touchdown and go back.
- Send them to mars for 2 years.

NASA said it's aiming for the second option. Sending everything ahead with solar electric propulsion which is cheap when it comes to fuel, but takes 2-3 years to get there. And then send the astronauts with chemical propulsion after.

But all those gravity assists were just to gain enough speed to match the comet's. Because comets fly faster than our current rockets can.

ICBMs are solid-fuel rockets. That's a whole other world from deep-cryogenic hydrogen/oxygen liquid-fuel rockets. They are stored ready to fly. You just light them off, and they go.

On the other hand, they need quite a lot of testing, and continued testing as your stock gets older, to ensure that they're staying reliable. The specific impulse is also lower, which hurts orbital payloads, and they can't be transported empty and filled on the pad immediately before launch, so you're dealing with a lot more mass to move big ones around.

The Indians used solid stages in their launcher for their Mars mission that got attention earlier this year. That launcher is four stages: solid, hypergolic, solid, hypergolic. The standard hypergols are storable at room temperature and by definition self-igniting, so they are comparable to solids in terms of easy short-notice activation, though less rugged.

Japan is also doing a solid-fuel launcher, specifically for convenient and low-cost launch operations.
