The landing is a program that runs by itself, and most of the exploration will have to just deal with the time delay. I'm not sure to what degree other actions are automated, like whether there's a "go here" command or they just need to input manual commands and wait to see what happened. Some of the sample-collecting might be semi-automated. "Drill here 2cm", "Put sample in analysis doohicky A and run test C, report results".

So apparently the earth sets from the spacecraft's point of view shortly after the parachute deployment. They'll be relaying data through satellites, but it's not guaranteed this will work. So if there's no signal back, it's possible we may have to wait a while until we know if the landing was successful or not.

for instance; as mission control says stuff like "parachute deployment", the video editor quickly switches to the parachute deployment video section.

so it's basically as close as you can get to realtime video, but with a nice dramatic flair (plenty of shakeycam and different camera angles for effect)

It is building the largest single aperture telescope ever build (66% larger than arecibo) and intends to build 30 arecibo class telescopes. It has built it's first major optical observatory which is now the largest spectroscopic survey telescope in the world (The last one lead to 4000 publications in 10 years).
China is very serious about physics and astronomy research.

The US too said they would get back to the moon by the 2020s and have had numerous failed attempts to build reusable vehicles. This does not mean that everything the US aims to do will not happen.

FAST has already started construction. This is a formal project with assured funding unlike those obviously unrealistic goals which were never formally adopted.

If anyone is curious- this is how they "Drive" Spirit (R.I.P) and Opportunity=

The rover would send a picture of what was directly in front of it. A tech at JPL would "plot" a course through the picture, avoiding rocks and loose sand. He would then calculate what the rover would have to physically do and write a program like-
"Rotate tires forward 3 revolutions, turn wheels 5 degrees left, Rotate tires forward 15 revolutions, turn wheels 9 degrees left, rotate tires forward 12 revolutions, turn wheels 8 degrees right, rotate tires forward 22 revolutions, turn wheels 6 degrees right.... etc etc etc" and then send that program to the rover.
The rover would execute the program, then send a new picture of what was in front of it.
Sometimes they'd move 3 feet to a rock that they wanted a better look at, sometimes they'd move 30 feet if they were done with an area and wanted to move on.

Friday goto work at 3:00 pm
Monday goto work at 7:30 pm

It won't be the end of robotic missions but it could well be the end of Mars for NASA, at least for a while (after MAVEN of course). The Mars scout program which aimed to send small missions to Mars as often as possible has already been cancelled. A follow up rover like MSL was axed last year and no mars missions made the down selection of one of the mid sized missions.
In the event of a failure it would likely be worse, not the death of NASA robotic missions altogether but more likely the death of NASA's flagship missions. NASA currently only has 2 large missions (flagships) on the board MSL and JWST, WFIRST is next in line but there is no room in the budget for it. The decadal survey is the document which essentially selects NASA's large missions, the 2010 one saw the demise of 3 joint ESA/NASA missions (an x-ray observatory, a gravitational wave detector and 2 spacecraft to study Jupiter's moons). It put WFIRST (a mission with similar goals as ESA's Euclid, to study the expansion of the universe) in first priority and put the explorer missions in second.

The explorer program is older than NASA and is now NASA's smallest class of missions, putting this in the large mission selection was a clear statement that large missions are dead. ESA are continuing their spacecraft of Jupiter but the other 2 missions and the NASA spacecraft are dead, the next ESA selection (when one of the 2 missions could be picked up) won't launch for 15-20 years. This badly hurt the ESA/NASA partnership which has been so successful, to add to this NASA pulled out of exomars which was to include an orbiter to investigate Mars' methane and a rover in 2018, ESA will continue both with new partner Roscosmos. The strangest thing is that while pulling out of their 700 million dollar contribution they have opened the floor for a 700 million dollar NASA mission, which many believe will never happen but it shows it wasn't about money. With the end of this partnership and the follow up rover any hope of moving onto a Mars sample return, what the Mars missions were supposed to lead up to, is dead.
Before I scare anyone when I say large missions are dead I mean the really big ones, missions like Juno are not flagship but new frontiers class and will continue as will the smaller discovery class and explorer missions.

For all this many would blame the shrinking budget but most of this happened before the cut, some would blame JWST which is probably closer to the truth but SLS takes some of the blame too.

Fist off going using a nuclear power source doesn't guarantee longevity. Power is not the limiting factor on spirit or opportunity, when the wind cleans the panels they have to be shut down for an hour each day because they generate too much power.

And no, NASA already build missions that last far longer than MSL will. Cassini is approaching it's 15th year in operation and will reach the grand old age of 20 before it is sent for controlled destruction.
Some missions cannot last very long, the cancelled Europa orbiter would only last 6 months in orbit of Europa before it would have to leave orbit to be destroyed after significant radiation damage.
Other missions simply cease to be worth while, the cost of supporting a mission after launch is many millions of dollars, after it's decided it isn't worth continuing it will be switched off or in cases where contamination is an issue, destroyed.

You simply don't build more mission than you need, Juno will only spend one year around Jupiter after 5 years getting there because it's all it's science objectives require.

Spirit and Opportunity were examples of short missions, most planetary science missions already last this long.

That's not true. MSL may carry the most advanced experiments sent to Mars but it is a long way from state of the art labs on earth.
For a long time the goal for Mars missions was clear, a sample return mission. But since the loss of the Mars Observer in 1993 it was realised that there needed to be lots of intermediate steps as it was far too complicated. So the Mars program as we have today was established. It was originally thought that MSL would be the last big in-situ explorer before the sample return which would be followed by a similar rover sent to cache samples for later return (dubbed MAX-C). MAX-C was to be sent with the ESA exomars rover and the sample return was to be a joint ESA/NASA mission. unfortunately MAX-C was axed as was the NASA exomars participation leaving Mars sample return (MSR) as good as dead.
