4833705 No.4833705 [Reply] [Original]

The special CERN seminar on the Higgs Boson is about to start in an hour. At this seminar, coming on the eve of this year’s major particle physics conference, ICHEP, in Melbourne, the ATLAS and CMS experiments will deliver the preliminary results of their 2012 data analysis. They have even flown out Peter Higgs for this.

You can watch the live webcast here: http://webcast.web.cern.ch/webcast/play_higgs.html

You should also learn these terms, if you haven't already, so you know a little bit what they're talking about: http://press.web.cern.ch/press/background/B09-Important_Higgs_terms_en.html

Let's begin the wild mass guessing. Probably not pigeon shit this time?

But FTL travel doesn't have to be direct. More exotic methods such as artificial wormholes and shifting through alternate dimensions are still on the table, if just also "pipe dreams" of sorts.

What Higgs can do for those, that'll be on whatever they announce.

Maybe they'll announce that the discovery of the Boson inadvertently created a resonance cascade in the accelerator tubes.

You don't pay attention to science as much as you should. Fermilabs increased their confidence levels as much as possible after utilizing data from 5 billion collisions. CERN has done fewer but with higher speeds and more reliable detectors. Last year they reported a preliminary single sigma confidence, they wouldn't be making a big deal about it unless it's past 3 sigma, which leaked videos have already implied they will announce even better, 4 sigma.

If the Standard Model is proven right, it just means our initial ideas and assumptions from decades ago were correct.

If the Standard Model is proven wrong, it means the ACTUAL model of particle physics is something new, something we haven't thought of. It opens the door to new possibilities, new ways for fundamental particles to interact, we'll probably need to come up with a completely new mechanism for describing how mass is generated.

Having to "start from scratch" means that the next few decades would be a flurry of new ideas and theories. One of the biggest scientific "failures" in history, the Michelson-Morley experiment, which shattered existing theories of the time on the "luminiferous aether" through which electromagnetic waves were believed to propagate. This "failure" revolutionized our understanding of electromagnetism and eventually led to the development of Special Relativity.
