Trying to get a Ph.D. is pointless unless you intend to increase humanity's knowledge about the subject you chose, and 95% of people with Ph.D.s today are lazy bastards who pride themselves over their achievement but fail to add anything new into humanity's knowledge database.

>PhD in ed., work at shitty place

I hear that one. I just got accepted to a PhD program for literature at a nationally acclaimed university (Northwestern Illinois, outside of Chicago) and have taught three semesters of college English after eight years of high school teaching, and I can't get a teaching job at a middle school that's an hour away from my house and is literally one of the bottom five schools in the city of Chicago. Man, everyone else has such high levels of education and such great credentials, why do we even try?

but seriously, im interested in this, what do you have to contribute to get english PhD?

>> No.1676195

Bullshit, OP. The PhD is the entry-ticket to an academic career. Of course, chances are that your PhD thesis will not revolutionize the world of science, but meh .. that's not the point anyway.

You sure they even want someone as well-educated as you for the job?

If someone does the same job for less money...well, you get the idea.

Not to sound like another 4chan know it all, but school systems don't ever want the most qualified people for the job. It provides a built in scapegoat when test scores go down and students fail. They can always say "Well, the real qualified people don't apply to teach for NYC, Chicago, LA, where ever."

To prove I'm not trying to be a know it all,

PhDs mostly just contribute an immensely over-ripe turd of absolute verbage to humanity's knowledgebase.

If it's Critical/Cultural Theory, or anything not related to the actual sciences, you may as well just cut to the chase and fart into a jam jar then give it to your committee.

The frustrating thing is that as much as knowledge *needs* to be expanded, very few people actually make significant contributions. It's not for lack of trying either. See how many PhD theses and papers, even ones that actually have something to say, make an impact in their field. It's very few. I can't really put my finger on it, but there's something more to it. It's not just a matter of creating knowledge, it has to be the right thing at the right time and it has to be seen by the right people.
