I was offered a PhD, I've done research at a university after my degree, and I've gotten into consulting where I've been biding my time as I apply for trainee patent attorney positions every year. In reality, nearly everyone stumble into the patent profession by chance. I got my PhD, did a few postdoc contracts, but saw that a professorship was unlikely. You apply to a department and your file is judged by all its professors collectively.
You must have a CV, research statement, GRE score, certificate of English proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS) and 3 letters of recommendation from professors. As a masters degree holder it is expected you have publications: they'd rather hire a bachelor with "potential" if you have none. They also want you to have teaching experience. You need to pay a processing fee of about 100 dollars per application and also for the exams. Deadlines are very early (in December) so you need to start preparing around August/September of the year you will graduate. Visa issues are handled after you are accepted I think.
See here for more tips:
http://kni.wikidot.com/doktorat-rekrutacja
ETHZ and EPFL in Switzerland also use this system I think? Not sure
>Western Europe
You apply directly to a professor (details what you should send will be on their website, you can just cold email if not). They will then interview you, if you do well there will be a second round of interviews where you give a talk on your thesis to the group and talk with the other PhD students individually. If you get selected the professor will guide you through the bureaucratic stuff. Recruiting peaks in January to April but at many places is year-round. Ideally you should go to conferences to meet them in advance
>scholarship
They have their own application processes with a billion hoops to jump through. For the US it's assumed you apply on your own in parallel with PhD applications, in Western Europe you can apply after you are accepted. Fulbright scholarship is very prestigious, has quotas by country and is supposedly quite easy for Eastern European STEM students in particular

Go in the US, do a PhD, and in the meantime keep applying for H1B. Even after your PhD, you should have 3 more years as OPT STEM, so overall you could have 7-10 years in total to get a dual-intent visa one way or another.
Then just a couple more to get the green card.

Applying from outside the US is nearly impossible with the amount of indians hoarding visas and gaming the systems, last year I think above 70% of H1Bs were awarded to indians nationals.

Personally I'm following this track, and it's looking good so far. Living in the US is better than Europe and it's not even comparable. I do research internships for 4-6 months and they pay twice what I would get working one year back home. People are not racist and actually super open unlike what our European medias love to say, I've never met friendlier people than Americans, even rednecks I can get along with despite not being white.
Also you can live in a fucking HOUSE, which is nearly impossible in Europe unless your parents own one since there is no space left and nothing is being built. But here in the US, it's the norm to have a house.
USA is amazing.

There are times most of us will feel down in the dumps. Things do get better.
>I think people shill highly competitive career paths so they get the best candidates.
Not quite. Time for some blogging:
The patent profession is rather conservative in mamy ways including not shilling much. We were like the business law firms but they modernized and started promoting their services and also their companies as a career. Often they ended up with a major disconnect between their image and reality on the ground. Patent law firms are still too conservative for any shilling, while PRV, the Swedish patent office, is now part of Great Place to Work. And yet we do need fresh blood to make up for retirements and at times expansion. And recruiting people is hard, and perhaps half come from the national patent offices. I enjoy this work, so I put in a word for this career choice here.

>> No.16105332

>>16105241
Rote memorization improves short term memory of a problem or skill and the act of practicing them improves the long term

Once you master something and decide to continue to run the equations then it’s called over learning and it can have the opposite effect but that’s not relevant if you haven’t mastered the material/subject/idea yet

If your brain has learned something new and it’s on the verge of having total recall of it you might experience a period where it’s suddenly more confusing than when you first started grappling with it, they say this is your brain building new neural pathways with the new idea and understanding of them and that if you hang in there it will suddenly clear and you will have access to that new knowledge the same way someone skilled with a guitar doesn’t need to think about each individual fret as he plays a song
My source was “a mind for numbers” by Barbara Oakley, I left out the diffuser and active thinking bits, trying to summarize the overlearning stuff it mentions in 4,000 fewer words

Bruh if you don’t have your PE that’s the first thing you should be focusing on. Power train design is boring as fuck but it pays. Get your PMP next, and then focus on learning programming so you can break out laterally into controls. Controls + Power clinches a EOR position at any design firm and you basically get to order minion engineers around to do your light work while casually reviewing drawings before stamping them.

I think an important issue with job seekers, especially STEM graduates, is location. You must learn to move to where the jobs are. In Greece for example, since the economy started to deteriorate, civil engineering graduates all go to places like the United Arab Emirates, doctors and dentists go to the UK or Germany, mech,, chem., and el. engineers move all over (US, UK, Germany, Singapore, Japan etc), math/science or bio-science/pharmaceutical majors continue on the academic route here (higher education is socialized in Greece - i.e. no fees exist, uni costs are paid for via taxation) and then do paid post-docs abroad or join research based corporations (quite a few go to Holland or Sweden or Denmark). The reason they do that is because they have the IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS, but they are in the WRONG PLACE. Once you've taken the hard route and done a STEM degree, you must then face the emotional (for some) hurdle of relocation. But, if you're in your twenties, to travel and relocate is a great idea, and if you stay on that route for 10 years, you can eventually return closer to home with the advantage of a lot of great experience on your CV.
So, STEM grads, it's not what you've studied that's the problem, it's where you are.

literally there is no point in engaging in a CS degree if you dont live in the US.
We have a massive influx of CS grads in the recent years in Europe and half of them do not give a fuck about anything they've learned, most were motivated by the prospects of extremely high paying job, which only exist in some parts of the US. So they find themselves dumbfounded when they end up earning 50k at best to do a job that drives them crazy, either because of the pressure of the job (agile development, scrum methods and internally competing with colleagues who are actually gifted) or the boredom that comes from a pure lack of interest in the field.
I've seen many reconvert recently, either going back to uni for another degree, or finding adjacent but non-technical jobs like technical writers or tech journalism.

Some degrees really only make sense to have depending on the place you live in, a mechanial engineer in Portugal and a mechanical engineer in Germany will not have the same job prospects and upward mobility.

With just a degree in physics, it is difficult.
With a more specialised PhD you'll have more chance of getting into making scientific equipment. Nano fabrication and semiconductor foundry work can be pretty manual. That said, the manufacturers who want physicists usually want them on the design or r&d side of the process and r&d can be very hands-off. It is unlikely to be manual.

Companies who make measurement systems or lasers generally want electrical engineers and companies who make pumps/dilution fridges/vacuums want mechanical workshop and cad experience and/or welding.

Just started working on a BSc in Biological Sciences via a (largely) online university, since the oilfield town I'm working out of doesn't have any post-secondary schools. There are a few legitimate online universities with fully recognized programs. As a rule of thumb if the university is government funded AND has a physical campus, it's legitimate. The amount of labs they get you to do in person (depending on the subject) marks a good program, too.

Don't expect to land your dream job after going to one of these schools, but it's a fine way to make your way up in the world. Take a look at 'Open University' out of England and Athabasca University out of Canada. Also, consider a transfer out of these to a physical uni if circumstances change.

Best of luck man!

We are somehow at a STEM surplus and shortage at the same time. This can only be explainable if the STEM graduates are of low-quality. America NEEDS to import high-skilled STEM graduates. America also can't afford to have high food prices so the low-quality STEM graduates working in non-STEM fields need to be replaced with cheaper SEA or Latin-American labor. But the lower wages mean they can't afford to eat so America must also provide them access to social services.

Also, don't apply to job postings that are at least a month old because those are ghost jobs. Many recruiters like to egg on applicants, but don't actually have any intention on hiring anyone. A masters is necessary for career progression in engineering in the UK because its virtually required to become a chartered engineer. You can't have real career progression in engineering without an msc degree. I mean you can but its very difficult. You're already set-up in this regard.

It doesn't help you out that much in terms of practical skills but you're supposed to pick that up as you go on the job. If your team/manager isn't being a good mentor to you then you should probably apply to other places because its essential that you learn a good amount of shit your first 2 years because people will be a lot less willing to hold your hand after that.

Try going up and pestering your manager with technical questions about why this works in X way instead of Y way, what would happen if we tried alternative B instead of our usual methodology of A, etc. They tend to appreciate that kind of enthusiasm and critical thinking and everyone likes having some dialogue with the bright young kid at work, especially boomer managers, some of whom are hated by their kids and are looking for a surrogate son.

The problem with a lot of new grads is that they avoid asking questions out of fear of looking stupid and end up spending an hour trying to fix a problem themselves that I could’ve done in 30 seconds if they had just asked me for help. This is obviously horribly inefficient and I always emphasize that they need to be asking questions basically all the time while they’re new but many are still apprehensive.

It's bad enough in your 20s but wait until you are mid 30s and the only thing everyone talks about in the office is their wife and kids and then they eventually find out that you aren't married and don't even have a gf and you are pushing 40.
It may sound like a meme but it seriously changes people's perception of you.
In the past it was just assumed you were in the closet but now that being gay has been destigmatized the only other option is for people to assume you are like a serial killer or a psychopath or something. It's fucking brutal.
Once they realize that you are almost 40 and still single they cannot get it out of their heads, they can't stop pondering what must be wrong with you, and it fundamentally changes everything.

>The thing no one talks about and what really makes it difficult to have a career in STEM is trying to pretend like you are sociable when you are not.
A STEM degree, especially a PhD, requires deep concentration and immunity against drive for immediate gratification. Deep concentration often demands solitude, so there is a two way cause and effect between STEM and life as a single.
>It's bad enough in your 20s but wait until you are mid 30s and the only thing everyone talks about in the office is their wife and kids and then they eventually find out that you aren't married and don't even have a gf and you are pushing 40.
I am there, it is not a problem. I dodged a lot of bullets along the way, I guess the best girls are taken quickly.
>It may sound like a meme but it seriously changes people's perception of you.
Sure? A lot of people are divorced these days, especially people over 40, so I don't really stand out.
>In the past it was just assumed you were in the closet but now that being gay has been destigmatized the only other option is for people to assume you are like a serial killer or a psychopath or something. It's fucking brutal.

>tl;dr I'm 21 and thinking about going to college, and I'm pissed at myself for not going sooner
Basically, I had a terrible childhood, bad teenage years where I was a wizard NEET dropout, etc.
Something changed the day I turned 18, I got my GED and IT certifications in short order because I always thought I was too stupid/socially inept to go to college so doing IT would be the next best thing.
Fast forward to today, I'm about to turn 21, I have a good career as a software engineer and I make good money. I have grown a lot since I turned 18 (honestly I have grown more as a person in 2 years than I did my entire teenage hood) and for the first time in my life I feel like I really want to socialize. I feel ready to pursue my lifelong, childhood dream of becoming an engineer and joining the Air Force (specifically the Space Force) as an officer. I'm going to do either astronautical engineering or EE.
Only problem is, I'll be a freshman when most people are graduating, and that really sucks because of the age difference and the fact that I'll be 3 years behind my peers. How much will this affect me and how do I cope with this? I have a very competitive personality and I feel like I'm starting over again even though I was already ahead of my peers in my career as a software engineer.
Was going to post this in /adv/ but I feel like you guys probably have a better perspective.

>> No.16113865

>>16113764
College is not an age-based competition.
You're there to get something out of it (a degree and skills) not to flex on zoomers. If you want to rizz up zoomettes, being 3 years older is actually a plus. 21 is YOUNG and basically strictly better than being 18 in every way (you are smarter and more mature, you have more financial freedom etc). In Israel or South Korea, everyone starts college at 20/21 because of the draft. They do fine.
That said I'm not sure how USAF recruiting works, have you discussed this with a recruiter and veterans/current officers? Are you sure you're not supposed to do some military training first and then get a degree? Why exactly is the military and engineering appealing to you vs your current job (for example are you interested in being a pilot?)? If you want to do R&D that's done by civilians at large military contractors.
I'd talk to an officer who does the job you want to do and discuss how he got there and what it's like. My understanding from lurking /k/ is that officers are kind of generalists and have to be involved in managing enlisted men who are mostly retarded
Also you should ask /meg/ on /k/ if you want a better answer

I have two options: do 3 years and get my GI bill (free ride to college, but life is shittier than being an officer + I'll be 25 when I get out) or do ROTC (you do military classes in college and become an officer when you complete college).
>Why exactly is the military and engineering appealing to you vs your current job
I enjoy military stuff. I was in the Civil Air Patrol cadets as a kid and really enjoyed playing with all the high-tech toys the military uses (I got to visit a lot of different contractors and military bases and use their equipment, it was awesome). I have a big interest in flight and especially space flight (I live like 10 miles from the KSC, I can see the vehicle assembly building from my street) and so the space force seems like the perfect blend of the two. Don't have a whole lot of interest in being a pilot desu.
>My understanding from lurking /k/ is that officers are kind of generalists and have to be involved in managing enlisted men who are mostly retarded
>If you want to do R&D that's done by civilians at large military contractors.
Hmm... yes, that is what I want to do. Most of those civilians have a college degree and a top secret clearance, I have neither
Maybe the case in other branches but I doubt it is the case for the Space Force.

You’ll likely need to go back for a grad diploma in pathology/blood testing. Or you’ll need to bite the bullet and just get your masters in the specific field. Yeah no kidding. It was cellular and molecular to be specific. So I guess it wasn't a complete meme like other subfields of bio...such as wildlife or something. I actually know a few of those guys that majored in wildlife bio and they're all just general laborers for our state's game and wildlife department, kek.

I was just wondering if there were any programs that trained you in lab skills much like a typical apprenticeship would. PCR, cell culturing, liquid handling, chromatography, DNA sequencing, etc. Right now I just don't have the money to go back to school. Thank you for the reassurance anon. I’m currently still cruising through some of my cybersecurity classes and my counselor had me write a detailed letter why I want to change majors. I get cybersecurity and I enjoy it quite a bit, but the market is so fucked and with AI becoming the norm, it just doesn’t make any sense to get that meme degree. Even CS majors with experience are fucking it all up for entry levels due to lay offs and bubble bursting. I considered EE as well but unfortunately none of the credits I took will transfer. At least I can have the cybersec and CE count as electives. I actually took an entire critical infrastructure class and currently taking a PLC and SCADA class. At this point, I rather just take the philosophy and math courses and just teach myself basic EE concepts and take it from there.

I'm a freshman EE student and honestly have no clue what fields are fun while also paying money. I like circuits and have my own little in home lab that I set up not long ago, but it seems like analog design as a field is dead. I looked up electronic design jobs in my city and there were very few openings, with most requiring Masters/PhD. I just want to do work in a field that lets me do cool problem solving stuff. What would you recommend?

Also,
I took an Industrial Controls class as an elective this semester and dropped it, mostly because the professor was an asshole but also because I didn't realize how much I'd hate the software. I like programming in general, but I didn't major in EE to be a programmer. I think what pisses me off the most is how big software is. Half of the "EE" research is just dressed up CS shit (IoT, Neural Network Control, Distributed Computing, ect.). Is this common? I go to a small state school, so I don't expect much but it's still embarrassing.

As for the other stuff you wanna do, and study isn’t an option. Just look up traineeship for laboratory techs. You’ll probably be able to get a blood lab technician job pretty easily. There could be government programs in your state for certificates, or further training programs that are cheap or basically free. I think medical lab tech is your say foward, use it as a stepping stone at least.

Wait until the second year when you start doing more interesting subjects to pick a career, when you find something that interests you then try and focus your final year project on that. If you want to work in comp architecture, you need a grad degree. There are always jobs for pcb design and power electronics, dont know how competitive those are though. You will need to learn programming no matter what, EE or not. Any engineering major will require some form of programming, and you will need to know it if you want to be competitive in your field. There is a ton of demand for radar, mmwave stuf, but I don't really know much about that as I don't do any analog. Mathlet here. Dropped out at grade 9 due to some pretty bad family problems. Been working in tech as a software dev since age 18, I'm 22 now. I have always enjoyed amateur radio in addition to computers so I want to pursue an electrical engineering degree (or maybe aerospace). Only problem is that I dropped out of high school at grade 9 (I have my GED) and I was never good at math to begin with. Is pursuing an engineering degree possible for me? Will I just be wasting time/money? Should I stick to being a code monkey? I really want to get into real engineering.
A few years ago I was working on a SDR project and taught myself some trigonometry and basic algebra using khan academy and a book, and I think I did ok. I seem to learn best on my own, maybe that's why I struggled with math in school.

Professors get emails all the time from random people who want to join, so it cant hurt unless you are annoying to them or something. I wouldn't start off by talking about yourself. Unless you have done something extremely exceptional there are 20 other grad students who could do the exact same things for that prof. Instead, skim a recent paper of theirs, or look at their website about what they do, and try to ask a couple questions below surface level about their work, saying you are interested in working on it

Holy shit anon, I'm in CS, so pardon my lack of understanding. Is it that bad?

Imo don't go back for engineering, a M. Sc. in math should be employable somewhere, if that is your sole goal. With your understanding in math, I think if you learn the type of thinking programmers have (no, it's not entirely like math, there are differences), you can land a job there? Shouldn't take long.

>Just look at all the Indians in Canada who are trying to go back.
Imo, most people have trouble adjusting. They come to foreign countries, but instead of learning from their new surroundings, they keep their own habits, and surround themselves with their own people. In which case, new segregated communities form. Some migrants know what to do though, and attempt to learn from their surroundings (often becoming successful/happy).

I am (partially) guilty of this and I moved within western EU (I tend to NEET and am not very social though). It's hard to socialize, learn the language, laws, dress accordingly, when everything you've learned before doesn't apply anymore. It takes conscious effort (Small example, where I'm from it is custom to say hi when passing someone on the street. In my current country, the first time I did this, people gave me mean mugs. I thought something was wrong with me for a while, that people didn't want me there kek, until a native told me they don't do that here.).

Coming from two opposite clashing cultures takes even more dedication than people can imagine. But it should be done out of respect, once you've decided to permanently relocate somewhere, you better respect your surroundings as best you can.
