Astronomy has a serious problem with how they publish images.
There is nothing wrong with doing false colors to highlight something or mosaics, but they always do a terrible job in being clear that this is not what you would see there.
Because of this we end up with people thinking Io is pineapple yellow, even worse like how people keep using that Magellan topographic render of Venus, most people have no idea Venus is an almost featureless white ball.
Some astronomers get angry if you point out this but they can't realize this just feeds conspiracy trolls and set people up to be disappointed.

It wasn't the better choice back in 2014 when the decision was made and it's debatable if it's even the right choice now. At the very least it would require completely reengineering the first stage.

It doesn't matter because there's no circumstance were SpaceX would sell raptors. They don't want to have go to through the hell of making sure that one engine can work for two different rockets. That's an overlooked reason of why the BE-4 has been so delayed.

The discussion about the use of SpaceX's Raptor engines by other companies raises interesting points about collaboration and competition in the space industry. Given the unique challenges of space exploration, do you think the future of spaceflight will be more characterized by competition or collaboration between different companies and countries? Also, how might the increasing involvement of private companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin influence the direction of space exploration, particularly in terms of lunar and Mars missions?

>> No.15961126

>>15961112
Expecting competitors to altruistically help each other is folly. For Raptor to realistically be used on anything other than SpaceX's rockets, the entire engine division of SpaceX would have to be split off. And that obviously won't happen.

I know for a fact that Vulcan has won contracts for Satellite Internet provider launches because SpaceX tried to strong arm the satellite company into giving up part of their frequency allocation in Canada to Starlink to launch on a Falcon.

Your point about the competitive nature of the space industry is well-taken. The scenario you described with Vulcan winning contracts over SpaceX illustrates how competition can drive business decisions in this sector. It seems that while there's potential for collaboration in certain aspects, like shared technological advancements or joint missions, the drive for market dominance and proprietary interests might continue to fuel competition. This dynamic could shape how technologies like the Raptor engine are developed and utilized, influencing the pace and direction of space exploration.

Your concerns about SpaceX's market dominance are quite valid. Vertical integration does give SpaceX a significant competitive edge, potentially leading to a market where they are the dominant player due to their cost-efficiency and technological advancements. The situation with European launchers is a prime example of the challenges faced by other entities in competing with SpaceX. This scenario raises important questions about the balance between fostering innovation and preventing market monopolization. It also highlights the need for a diverse space industry where multiple players can contribute to and benefit from the advancements in space technology and exploration.

The fundamental break was that JPL's design did not take advantage of Artemis or commercial capabilities in anyway. So it was a one-off boondongle that would have negatively impacted Artemis or caused delays in Artemis due to funding conflict. This pissed off a lot of people across the government.

It's one thing if the proposal you're putting up allows for some level of redundancy for your mission vs another or allows for synergies. It's something else when you basically act like old school Microsoft, where your mission design sabotages others within the same organization; and since NASA's Artemis program (SpaceX HLS aside) is distributed across all 50 states and now over 140 signatory countries. That simply will not be tolerated anymore.

So JPL got reamed because decades of favored preference made them forget to read the room before they submitted their proposal which embarrassed politicians. It's entirely possible that the Artemis Accords signatories got on the phone with NASA and were like "ayo, what the fuck?!" Which trickled up to Congress, and the rest is history.

https://www.nasa.gov/general/mars-aerial-and-ground-global-intelligent-explorer/

Mars exploration platform , Mars Aerial and Ground Intelligent Explorer (MAGGIE). MAGGIE is a compact fixed wing aircraft with ultra-high productivity efficiency powered by solar energy to fly in the Martian atmosphere with vertical take-off/landing (VTOL) capability, which is enabled by advanced deflected slipstream technology with CoFlow Jet (CFJ). The cruise Mach number of MAGGIE is 0.25 with a cruise lift coefficient CL of 3.5, nearly an order of magnitude higher than conventional subsonic aircraft to overcome the low density of the Martian atmosphere. The ultra-high cruise CL with CL/CDc of 9 is made possible by CFJ that overcomes the low Reynolds number effect on Mars. The range of MAGGIE for a fully charged battery per 7.6 sol is 179 km at altitude of 1,000 m. The total range of MAGGIE per Martian year is 16,048 km. The representative mission for MAGGIE presented would conduct three atmospheric and geophysical investigations, all supporting different timescales of the Dynamic Mars science theme. These include a study of the origin and timing of the Martian core dynamo from the weak magnetic fields found in the large impact basins, a regional investigation of the source of methane signals detected by the Tunable Laser Spectrometer on the Mars Science Laboratory in Gale crater, and mapping of subsurface water ice at high resolution in the mid-latitudes where it has been observed from orbit.

>> No.15962692

>>15962689
The conceptual MAGGIE system study indicates that the concept appears to be feasible, but need to be further investigated, designed, and verified under Martian atmospheric conditions in Phase I. MAGGIE would be able to perform the first global-scale atmospheric mission at Mars and revolutionize our capability of exploring almost the entirety of the Martian surface. It is the first concept to enable ongoing exploration of this region of Mars and would provide a substantial leap in capability for NASA’s exploration of the Red Planet. The attractiveness of airborne missions on Mars has been amply demonstrated by the Ingenuity helicopter. MAGGIE would be similarly engaging to the public, both in its audacity, and in the variety of environments it could explore, study, and image. The technology would also enhance VTOL aircraft technology on Earth and other planets.

It's not *that* hard to make, and a lot less risky than welded ribs and stringers. if some random welders apprentice could make something as robust as a cnc can make orthogrid oldspace would do it. it's just too prone to cracking

The thing is, that someone is going to want to get paid, and huge sheets of aerospace grade metals aren't cheap when you want them shipped back. Grids are mechanically superior, but the small increase in strength isn't worth the increase in cost. Welding and stringers can be vertically integrated a lot more easily.

I'm retarded, can someone with an understanding of orbital mechanics explain why this rocket can bring a greater payload to Lunar orbit than it can to geostationary orbit despite the moon being so much further away? Does it take more energy to get a perfect geostationary orbit as opposed to getting the delta-v for a lunar insertion? Somehow I find that hard to believe but I'm not an expert in this.

because getting to geo orbit means that you have to burn to circularize
this is different from geo transfer and TLI because you only need to do one burn, the payload does the rest to get to its target orbit

>> No.15962920

>>15962912
There's a pretty big energy difference between TLI and LLO just like there's a pretty big difference between GTO and GEO. TLI is just a extra-elongated version of GTO. They payload will have to handle insertion, circularization, etc. I don't think Vulcan actually has any direct to lunar orbit capability.

CLPS is a terrible and doomed program. The low-budget no-fault-tolerance approach may have worked with LEO/cargo missions, but making brand new aerospace companies race to the bottom for firm-fixed-price contracts over something as difficult as landing on the moon does not set us up for success. I will be shocked to see a single CLPS lander land. This is what happens when we allow congress to drive space exploration.
