Is it wrong for me to think that the opinion of most of these people who studied high-temperature superconductors is almost entirely worthless?
LK-99 allegedly solved the problem in a way they never really imagined, why would I take their opinions in the matter seriously when this is outside their area of expertize?

You will see that most of the people that completely dismiss it don't even engage with it, while the people who are open to try engage with the theory of how it work. It's the hypothetical problem, they can't engage with it because it would destroy their egos since they've been looking at the wrong place for the solution.

There is literally nothing lost by being open to the idea, if it ends up being a scam we will learn soon enough.

In any regard, these headlines seem to concede my argument that processing wires from these ceramics is complex and mostly useful in demonstration projects, which is unlike heating silica glass slightly above the Tg and pulling a fiber to be spin onto a spindle.

If you want widespread acceptance of high temp super conductors for usage in large scale projects such as high voltage, long distance electric transmission in commercial markets, it's probably not viable. Processing will never be akin to or as easy as glass fiber production.

>We'll figure it how to scale manufacturing after throwing billions of dollars of R&D at it, the point is that it can be done.
This is the usual response but physics of processing ceramics more or less haven't changed in fifty years. I hope you're right, should high temp superconductors come to fruition, I expect the processing and mass production to be a major hurdle. Jury is still out on this research and will be for quite some time despite all the retardation here. Also, another consideration, I believe their theoretical concept is immense internal pressures within the material, I work as a materials engineer and can tell you, intentionally adding huge residual internal stresses to the material will make processing an extra chore to scale if it's even possible to get yields that are longer than a few mm, I can't even imagine the reject rate for early scale production should this sort of technology ever be commercialized. Who knows though, semiconductor creation the way we do it now would be an impossible feat 30 years ago.

>>15611335
>The problem is that we don't know if it's simply too difficult to make roebel cables at scale cheaply, or if there isn't enough demand to drive investments to do that.
Probably a mix of both, I suspect with the actual needs for SCs now, the prices is much more flexible, if you really need a SC, generally you're willing to pay two arms and two legs for it and deal with all the bullshit of maintaining it's properties.
>Remember, in order to even use these cables, you need a ludicrous amount of cooling. The cost to cool the demonstration devices is so high that I'd expect that to be the main hurdle for any mass adoption.
I'd believe it is a major hurdle, and keeping the pressure within bounds since that can affect superconductivity too. This basically means there are challenges running HVDC replacement undersea cables due to the high pressures for water weight or similar. With he Meissner effect could be decent for maglev

I used to do this for a job, it's super easy.

>strip sheathing
>clean naked fiber with IPA
>put both ends in clamps
>clamps go in cleaver which scores and snaps it perfectly square
>clamps go in splicing machine
>auto aligns the ends, two electrodes zap them together
>heat shrink wrap the splice

It's not a completely flawless connection but the losses are basically non-existent. For repeaters, they come from the factory with tails on them that you splice the leads onto.

Makes sense, it doesn't need to be perfect since repeaters will boost the signal back up to a designated intensity. Someone who works on superconductors and YBCO talked about it.
https://twitter.com/drjolatunji/status/1684071807966650370

"Superconductors are not a panacea. The paper shows a tiny critical current, in the mA range. Not enough for useful large scale applications like you're suggesting."

"I design superconducting magnets professionally, in a 4mm wide tape with a 1-2 micrometer layer of YBCO, we can get critical currents exceeding 2 kA at hundreds of meters of wire length. I'd wait before claiming large scale applications are feasible"

"That's fine, I am less skeptical and think the results are real. However, there are hundreds of discovered superconducting materials, most have low current density, poor in-field performance, and cannot be made into long wires. So are unfeasible for large scale applications."

So even if LK-99 is real, it's very unlikely it will ever be used for anything than very niche applications, and won't be the "energy problem solver that allows long distance power delivery and zero-loss electronics" normies are already calling it.

are you a 12 year old? do you even know Ohms Law?

If you have a superconducting transmission wire, you dont need to transmit high voltages across long distances. You also don't need high voltage transformers or substations either. These all exist to deal with the losses of energy to heat in current transmission lines. With a superconducting wire you simply run as many amps as you want through it to push as much power to the other end as you want without any losses.

Okay, how do we transmit electricity from the wind/solar farms to the places people live 3-500 miles away? How about the nuclear power plant 75 km to the cities? Also don't SCs have limitations to current throughput?

>You also don't need high voltage transformers or substations either
Ah yes, I must have forgot, industrial power generation systems naturally output 120V or 220V straight for your consumption.

>These all exist to deal with the losses of energy to heat in current transmission lines.
Of course industrial generators create voltage in the kV range and it gets stepped down several times onsite, at substations, and right in front of your property to 220/480 or higher depending on the type of property (in the US). But alas I'm explaining things to people that either don't care or are too retarded.

>With a superconducting wire you simply run as many amps as you want through it to push as much power to the other end as you want without any losses.
If you knew anything about SCs you would know that when you have a current flow there is a perpendicular magnetic field that is formed. Magnetic fields interfere with a SCs ability to act as a SC.

I must admit, I'm generally impressed, you fuckers are as slippery as a eel coated in silicone based lube while still retaining the ego of NDT without any actual credentials or experience to back it up. I still haven't heard, even if you can find a viable superconductor, how do you produce ceramic lines that are capable of inexpensive manufacturing and can be reliably built in increments more than a few mm. There are some cool applications for SCs but let's stop pretending like they are really going to make ground breaking society wide changes. They will continue to be relegated to niche applications for the foreseeable future because they are hard to make, join, and have lots of other limitations.

>> No.15622722
