desalination is very fucking expensive. you have to filter the water from the salt which isn't energetically simple or easy. then you needs to mine the salt away which is hard because the salt will be costly and uncompetitive with regular salt which means it has to be chucked as waste. That's why desalination only happens on islands where its competitive because you are far from the mainland

There's no easy way to dispose of the salt

They have, just make a big condenser. Put ocean water in, let it heat up in the sun, get fresh water and dry salt.
