People often forget Yangel's R-56 proposal (of OKB-586, the modern ukrainian Yuzhnoye) for the soviet launcher bid; particularly the early 4-4-1 design; it was a modular approach that could lift 40-70 tons to LEO; a good payload for moonshots, it also could be transported by rail from Dnipro to Baikonur, contrary to the other heavy launcher proposals. But even the 6 meters monobloc version would have been pretty interesting, and a lot of its parts could be transported by canal from ukraine to baikonur.
The great thing is that Glushko was already working with him and they got along well together, and unlike Chelomei he isn't going to be sidelined once Khrushchev is deposed.

Open for discussion (except by that one retard who accuses everybody of being "redd*t):
after the N-1 crashed and burned the Soviets ought to have switched to a Sea Dragon scheme with the hope of eventually launching them from the Black or Caspian Seas, the effort they put into their stupid "Caspian Monster" ground-effects seaplane should have gone into this instead, and their technical expertise and equipment for constructing giant submarine hulls would have contributed greatly to this program.

We probably would have seen a Saturn C-2 based Apollo with a lot of earth-orbit assembly flights. The bad news is that NASA projected you'd need at least fifteen C-2 launches to build out a lunar mission in LEO. The good news is this would have encouraged the Soviets to try a Proton or Soyuz based competitor doing the same and we would have had a real race on our hands.

One of the critical (and false wishful) argument against Starship is it can only go to 1 orbit therefore no one would use Starship to send 100 satellites because sats would need ~different dedicated orbits therefore they argue its cheaper to buy a $20-100M less capable small/medium rocket that can carry ~100kg - 10t vs a $40M super heavy starship rocket that can carry 150 ton.

For whatever reason, they're hoping people wont buy rideshares as they fear the Starship.

Ok, would it make sense to have a centaur like, re-usable, methane based in orbit tug/bus to move sats up into higher orbits?
Starship carries around a lot of dead weight if you are just moving a 5 ton sat around, it's why it doesn't perform that well for GEO missions.
This could potentially save you a lot on tanker flights.
You could even potentially bring it back down from orbit inside starship for servicing.

>Wouldn't lack of genetic diversity in a space habitat pose long-range health problems for the inhabitants? Wouldn't space settlers get sick of seeing the same scenery and people for their entire lifetimes?
>These questions are grouped together because they both arise from the same common perception: That a space settler would have little or no opportunity to travel outside of their habitat.
>A situation where there is only one or a very small number of space settlements is not likely to last very long. The second habitat can be built for a fraction of the price of the very first one because the in-space infrastructure will already be in place. Additional habitats will be built not by transient laborers from Earth, but by nearby permanent space residents.
>Still, there is a persistent perception that travel from one habitat to another will be uncommon. Why? Because it will involve space travel, and, as everyone knows, space travel is expensive, difficult, complicated, and dangerous. But we must remember that the kind of space travel we typically think about here on Earth is travel from the Earth's surface into orbit, which is undeniably all four. But travel from one space habitat to another in a nearby (or perhaps even the same) orbit will be a much simpler kind of space travel.
>This type of inter-orbital space travel is not only much easier than the kinds we typically think about; it is, by some criteria, even easier and safer than air travel. In the vacuum of space, there can be no inclement weather (fog, ice accumulation, microbursts, etc.), nor air turbulence. Although radar and radio transponders are likely to be used, one could conceivably get by without them, and navigate by the stars. And consider that on an airliner, failure of all engines would mean a serious problem for everyone involved. On a space-to-space transporter, you would continue to coast in the general direction of your destination.

one tier down would be things like submarines, but even those go into port regularly for repairs. ISS has been up there for decades.
obviously you mean they produce their own food and maybe replacement parts to an extent. keep in mind this is not something that happens anywhere on earth. Presumably they're still getting regular shipments from earth, because no astronaut wants to live for years on whatever the 3 easiest crops to farm in space are, so they'll still be shipping in some foodstuffs.

>Skylab was the first space vehicle in which the astronauts ate at a table using spoons and forks, rather than squeezing everything from tubes and baggies. Their table was a mere pedestal that supported their food trays. There were seats, but those were seldom used: to stay in a sitting position in zero gravity requires that you bend at the waist and hold yourself bent. It puts a constant and severe strain on stomach muscles, and in fact those were the only muscles better developed when the crew landed than when they went up. The real problem, though, was the table itself.
>It didn't do a very good job of holding the trays, to begin with. They tray lids were held down with what Lousma called "the most miserable latch that's ever been designed in the history of mankind or maybe before." Pogue said of the table, "I wouldn't want the people that designed that table to do anything else..."

According to an analysis by a group of researchers, there is a 6% chance that the Tesla Roadster will collide with Earth and a 2.5% chance with Mars over a time period of 3 million years. The first potential collision with Earth could occur within the next few tens of thousands of years. The Roadster's longevity in space depends on various factors, including the accuracy of such predictions and unforeseen changes in celestial dynamics.

They are 20th century humans with same morals and ways of thinking who happen to have some very advanced technology in certain areas. They completely ignore the issue of genetic modifications, cybernetics enhancements, fucking AI, and the fact that in millions of years or when we get to be an intergalactic civilization (or group of civilizations) humans will most probably look nothing like we do today. Hell, by the time we reach the era of Black Holes and much later try to escape the death of the universe "humans" could even be some weird collective energy beings or whatever.

Mass market scifi stories have to follow conservation of human attention. If you want the audience to focus on the implications of shiny new propulsion or just reenact the Battle of Midway in space, you can't have Altered Carbon style consciousness backups changing the meaning of what it is to live or die at all. The audience would get lost. Settings like Eclipse Phase that try to do everything at once get stuck in the nerd ghetto.

It can go either way and really just depends on Hitler's whims which are impossible to predict with any reasonable accuracy. I do think that if the Nazis committed to spaceflight they would do so with much more zeal and nationalism than either the Soviets or the US. The narrative would not be "for all mankind" but a demonstration of the might of the German people, their technological greatness, and their will to expand beyond even their Earthly shackles. Basically the German version of what /sfg/ wants the American program to be.

I would expect a Germany-US space race with roughly the same framework as real life, but with more aggressive and nationalistic posturing from both parties. I don't think the Germans would ever be content with second place, since it would be seen as a direct refutation of their ideology (unlike the Soviets who were more materialistic), but the American outlook is similarly stubborn and it would become a question of how much both parties are willing to invest in what is for all purely practical purposes a dick waving contest.

This is something that makes me feel very uneasy. In the far, far future when we are trying to expand through the galaxy and then the Local Group, if we didn't happen to beat the universe itself by modifying its law or escaping this realm of reality somehow by then, our ethic and worldview will probably be very different to how they are now. All that extra propellant will of course give the rocket a lower TWR. But in this case since your payload is simply whatever propellant you have leftover when you reach orbit the total mass that's brought up is much greater than if it were launching a regular payload.

Beamed solar only makes sense with big bastard satellites precisely because of that problem. Starship is the only vehicle that can allow orbital construction of properly sized SPS constellations, actually exceeding the proposed flight rate, payload, and cost estimates from Star Raker. Given how ground solar works perfectly well at low latitudes these days, you'd want to place the satellites in a Tundra Orbit to optimize delivering power to cold, dark parts of North America (or Eurasia).

re-entry is unknown and the tiles keep falling off the starship from every static fire, from the wind and randomly, so I would see that as the largest unknown at this point

because unlike a car, that you can drive multiple times without lengthy inspecitons where the consequences of many failure points are mostly your car doesnt start or you have to stop at the side of the road or something, a simmilar failure with a rocket would lead to the horrific death of everyone on board or full loss of vehicle and cargo if unmanned.

And every single time people either ignore you or tells you to fuck off. Take a hint you autistic subhuman. You're not some fun personality of the thread. You don't contribute to "thread culture". You're just cancer that can't even be filtered. At least other thread personalities are interesting/funny and knows shit about spaceflight. Your subhuman is only here to seek validation over your garbage vtuber shit.

O&G rigs are max 4 weeks rotation.
Same with FIFO mining in remote areas.
Submariners do 1-2 months, max 3.
It's an entirely different thing and yet still completely fucks these people up. Rates of drug use, depression and domestic violence are through the roof, even though it's blue collar jobs that pays more than a doctor.

Now that's one month away at a time, try 24 months, with no possible way to return in an emergency.
The mental game is the only real one assessment teams will focus on until they are completely satisfied, everything else is secondary.
Any retard can surface mine, not any retard can remain sane on a colony 250 million kms away for years.

> While some people on polar expeditions savor a gratifying sense of achievement, the researchers said, 40 to 60 percent of them may suffer negative effects like depression, sleep disruption, anger, irritability and conflict with co-workers.

> About 5 percent of these people endure psychological disturbances severe enough to merit treatment with medication or therapy, the researchers said.

InSight had a science payload of around 50kg, which required a cruise stage of 608kg to get it from interplanetary cruise to landed on the surface.

using kerosene (high density, 300s isp) would require a wet mass of
1.88e+519 Kg (universe has a mass of 1e+53 kg)

using electric propulsion (4000s isp)
3.31e+41 kg (about mass of milky way)

using fusion propulsion (400 km/s exhaust velocity)
~4000tons

this doesn't take into account the dry mass of the engines, so the actual values would be far higher. can't be bothered to rewrite the code though
