For instance, black holes themselves are a consequence of Einstein's mathematical model. Before 1906, nobody would have believed you that gravity could stop light. And in fact, for quite some time after nobody would have believed you still. It was purely theory based on math until we found proof.
This is the same way we learned about quantum entanglement, discrete energy packets, induction motors, and much much more. The math came first.
