I hear this a lot, but I know a lot of very attractive very funny women. (And also funny ones of average attractiveness.) Obviously that's a kind of meaningless anecdote, but I've seen enough counter-examples that I'm skeptical of any kind of significant inherent funniness difference.

There's probably some truth to the idea that men need to rely more on humor to have dating success while women don't really need anything but physical appearance and that this is a kind of pressure that leads to more of a humor culture in men. I think a lot of it's also due to personality and socialization. You typically kind of need a more brazen, uninhibited personality to be funny or even to try to be, while women tend to be more modest and unconfident (due to cultural/learned reasons or otherwise). Some might also consider it unfeminine or too "alpha" to do it around guys.

I think sentience indeed is kind of a spectrum, and I think estrogen induces it to a degree and testosterone inhibits it to a degree. At least in certain ways. Testosterone makes you think and behave more mechanically (not that that's necessarily a bad thing at all) while estrogen makes you focus more on your, and others', consciousness and mind.

Obviously both men and women are highly sentient, and even the most mechanical autist-brained man is still very aware and self-aware, but estrogen is even more associated with self-awareness, introspection, and theory of mind. It improves the ability to model one's own mind and the minds of others.
