The Space force is a completely pointless as a branch of the military. They do not need a boot camp seeing as they have no need for grunts. They do not have rockets they even a maintenance crew for. The over seeing of satellites should have been kept under the air force since they would be the ones actually using them or moved to a non military branch similar to something like the NSA.
They are the biggest joke of a branch, if you hate the SLS for its wasted time and money then you should hate an entire branch of the military that is the embodiment of the SLS project.

The air force wasn't created until many decades after air planes were used in the military. The space force could maybe become a legitimate branch once they have a whole fleet of SpaceX starships to use and maintain as well as equipment in space that requires man power. $1000 ($1500-$500) x 1 million subscribers = 1 billion subsidized cost
1 million subscribers x 12 month x $110 = 1.32 billion
In 1 year, $320 million net positive cash was made. Lets say $320M is used to maintain the network.
But you need Sat launches as well. So that's 2000 sats @ 250K a pop = $500 Million
2000 sats / 50 sats launch = 40 launches
40 launches x $30M a launch = $1.2 billion
Launch cost + sat hardware = $1.7 B
2nd year of subscription = $1.320B-(.320 maintenance) - $1.7B = $0.7B net loss
3rd year of subscription = $1B - $0.7B = $300M profit
4th year of subscription = +$1B, with $1.3B profit
5th year of subscription = +$1B, with $2.3B profit

Ofcourse the Starlink isn't a static number, but if it were, SpaceX would be profitable, not very profitable, just "few billions" in profit. With more launching coming and growing customer base, potentially outscaling the launch cost, eventually the ROI will come down closer/closer until net positive cash flow outpaces net investment. Starship will only speed up that process.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Orion,
is in fact, SLS/Orion, or as I've recently taken to calling it, SLS plus Orion.
Orion is not a launch vehicle unto itself, but rather another multibillion dollar component of a partially functioning pork system made useless by the SLS subcontractors, shitty designs, and Alabama river rocks comprising a gigantic scam as defined by the GAO.

Many taxpayers fund a small part of the SLS scam every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of SLS which is widely mocked today is often called "Orion", and many of its victims are not aware that it is basically the SLS scam, developed by the SLS lobbyists.

There really is an Orion, and these people are seeing it blow up, but it is just a
part of the scam they fund. Orion is the capsule: the payload in the system
that allocates the government's resources to other districts that need pork.
The capsule is an essential part of a launch system, but useless by itself;
it can only incinerate astronauts in the context of a complete launch system. Orion is normally used in combination with the SLS boondoggle: the whole scam is basically SLS with Orion added, or SLS/Orion. All the so-called "Orion"
debris fields are really distributions of SLS/Orion.

You should get over the fact that /sfg/ sucks because there is little currently happening in in spaceflight and most people here, including myself, aren't intelligent or knowledge enough to contribute anything beyond topical shit like when Starship will launch and the constant stream of low effort shitposts scares the autists away from effort posting.

What's the point of Lunar Gateway? If all they wanted was a fuel depot, they could have just asked Musk to park a Starship there. Worst part of it is that we don't even know how to mine the Moon yet to replenish the depot, and NASA didn't even plan to transport the necessary machinery for the task. If NASA was in charge of mining, it will probably take ~25 years to just get started. It's so fucking depressing to even think.

You don't know what you're talking about, even by JPL standards this is premature and this shouldn't have happened.

>the wear on the wheels kept increasing at a higher rate than JPL had planned for, and by early 2017 (after about 16km of driving), the rover had experienced the first breaks in the much thicker structural elements that hold its wheels together, called grousers.
>Their latest predictions, based on how much more driving the rover is likely to do and incorporating driving strategies that have substantially reduced wheel wear, suggest that 14 broken grousers won’t happen until somewhere around 2034.

From the wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanical_counterpressure_suit

>A number of problems also turned up, primarily related to the problem of keeping the suit in strong mechanical contact at every point on the body. Concavities or small folds in the fabric could lead to fluid pooling in the gaps; the groin area proved extremely difficult to tailor successfully. To correct this, small pads of polyurethane foam were inserted into concavities and were successful in most problem areas. The suits had to be tailored to each individual, although the same was true of all space suits of the era. The largest difficulty was donning and removing the suit. In order to effectively provide the minimum pressure of 0.3 bars (4.4 psi) necessary for human physiology, the suit had to be extremely tight-fitting, making donning and doffing a highly strenuous task.

with modern technology, could we weave into the suit some of those muscles that contract with electricity. the idea being that you could apply a current to the fabric and it would expand, allowing the wearer to egress or ingress without issue, once the current was removed the suit would contract and become skin tight.

it's the most optimal solution, which means less opportunity for pork and embezzlement. Established EVA suits are manufactured by oldpsace conservatives who can't entertain the idea of any non-iterative improvements. SpaceX might be able to do it but they don't have anyone with the right kind of autism, everyone there is a roggetsperg and nobody cares about clothes (have you seen the wrinkled tshirts elon wears for non-mainstream interviews?). New companies probably have a better chance than SpaceX at making something competent at least, but MCP is too radical for anyone else.

First, while good in moderation, unrestrained utopianism can be harmful when it takes energy and attention away from efforts that actually have a realistic chance of changing the world for the better.
Second, we here might not but a lot of the general public take Elon’s promises at face value. Years from now, people are going to run out of patience, and then they will be dismissive of all ambitious projects because “fuck its more of that techno bullshit, no more of that no thanks”.

You sound like you watch those very smart deboonkers on youtube and those people create a problem, a controversy out of nothing to gain views. Ask yourself, why should a common Joe care what Musk says on twitter? Why would he run out of patience? Does he have some kind of deal signed with Musk? What Musk does barely affects the general population.
In reality, Musk has obligations to NASA, his private customers and Tesla shareholders. That's what matters, and Musk hasn't failed those groups. Yes, he didn't start Tesla but thanks to him, it the company survived, as opposed to many other startups, and grew a lot. He also received and fulfilled many contracts for NASA, proving SpaceX to be a trustworthy and reliable company. Do you think that people at NASA care that Falcon 9 was supposed to have 24h turnaround and FH was supposed to feature propellant crossfeed? No, Musk delivered exactly what NASA was expecting from him.

>Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp in its year-long lawsuit had accused the Air Force of unfairly awarding development contracts to Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin and other competitors for new rocket systems in 2018.
>But in a ruling that was briefly posted online by the court before being sealed, the judge found no wrongdoing by the Air Force in denying the company funds to help develop Starship, a reusable rocket system that Musk envisions will send satellites to orbit and one day ferry humans to the moon and Mars.
>According to the order, part of SpaceX’s pitch to the Air Force included a previously unreported less-reusable version of Starship whose upper stage would not return to Earth after delivering a payload into orbit - a “substantial” design change to the rocket’s fully reusable architecture that the Air Force considered too complex of a challenge.

How would E2E Starship deal with weather?
Weather can change spontaneously and isn't yet fully predictable within the timespan of an intercontinental Starship flight.
An airplane in this situation has a few options. If it's obvious enough that it can't land at the destination, it can cancel. In-flight, planes can wait out inclement weather with their excess fuel. If that's not enough, they can divert. There's also the capability to abort a landing at any stage to try again or divert.
Starships would only be able to cancel and, extremely optimistically, divert in early-mid stages of flight. Thus, a Starship would need to either be tougher than an airplane to deal with hail, lightning, wind, and wet or snowy landing sites; or it would have to cancel at the mere chance of bad weather, which would render it useless in many parts of the world. It would need to overcome these challenges to become a responsive or competitive mode of transportation.

The Protons launch reliability was pretty awful until about the mid 70s so relying on 4-5 to launch successfully in a row to pull off a single lunar landing would have been even more risky than using the N1. They should have just stuck to original plan, which involved two 24-engine type N1s pulling off an Earth-orbit rendezvous landing profile rather than switching horses to a single launch Lunar-orbit rendezvous approach. Increasing the number of engines and using an assortment of tricks to make the N1 just capable enough to loft the 95 tons required for the LOR approach rather than 75 tons it was designed for is what killed it in the end

You know the answer to that. The best materials for a solid metal wheel are steel or titanium, because those metals have fatigue limits so you can actually achieve "infinite" stress cycles below a certain amount of strain. Aluminum has no fatigue limit so it WILL eventually fail.
