Way too many assumptions itt. If relativistic weapons are a thing they could still be detectable if they move at sub c. Therefore, it could be defended against by intercepting with another fast rock.
Furthermore, a civ capable of relativistic speeds would not be sitting on a single planet. They'd have conquered millions of planets unless for some reason they were building tall. So if one or two were threatened it wouldn't be a species ending scenario for them. And space is still so big, there is no reason to compete for resources either.

So all this speculation is fun and based on some assumptions that appear logical but upon further examination turn out to not be that logical at all.

Because after the second world war, America decided to take on the role of a global police officer.
This worked fine for quite a while, but Russia and China (the only other countries of real importance) haven't stood still: they've been taking over the world in their own way:
Russia by solidifying its own country by developing weapons and gaining a monopoly on gas which most of Europe is dependent on (making Europe almost completely incapable of responding to military action).
China, too, has been solidifying its own country by ruling with an iron fist. This allowed them to create an entire empire built on cheap labour and taking on other countries' trash (almost every Western country is completely dependent on China).
While America may have been enough of a threat to keep the peace, that threat is almost entirely gone now.
America had largely become a joke thanks to its people and governance slowly degenerating.
People aren't able to think for themselves thanks to teacher unions keeping the quality of education low, almost all jobs pay too little for people to live their lives, people have grown lazy and fat thanks to modern luxuries, etc, etc, etc.
Russia took notice of this and decided to test America's ability to govern the world by taking over a small piece of land and aside from some "outrage", America did absolutely nothing.
In more modern times, both Russia and China have played roles in destabilizing the trust of America's citizens in their governments: Marxism led to doubt and anger, while China is pushing activists to take action (look up on who is supplying BLM/Antifa with weapons).
If a civil war starts in America, America'll no longer be capable of policing the world, allowing Russia and China to do whatever they want again.
And I'd bet my life on the fact that whatever happens, it won't stop at just taking an island this time.

Fortunately we will never make contact, the aliens will hit our planet with a hyperluminal missile and we will be vaporised before we even know. And that's a good thing!

First off, you don't need realtime communication. Who's to say aliens would not be content to wait 100 years for a response? Or maybe they have a bunch of directives on what to do if they encounter something. Maybe they don't need to communicate because they're their own entity / boss or whatever. The very first communication you should attempt is to draw 10 lines on paper or in the dirt or whatever is on hand to communicate to the aliens we are a base 10 species. Presumably any alien civilization capable of traveling the stars will have a grasp on mathematics and the rules of mathematics don't change regardless of how alien these aliens might be. The next thing to draw would be a simple diagram of the solar system, showing the 8 planets and their orbits, as well as major moons and indicate that you understand which one is Earth.

Hopefully by this point the aliens understand you are an intelligent species and not some bizarre grunting primate. You could maybe at this point try some simple sound based communication like indicating you are "human" and the planet is "Earth" and our star is "Sol."
There is a strong possibility aliens wont hear sound or wont hear sound in our specific frequencies so keep in mind that audio communication may be useless. Mathematical communication is really the only universal language you have, so doing simple stick mathematics and formula to communicate is your best bet.
