My take on this is that viral pandemics like this are an expression of evolution: there are too many humans alive on the planet at the same time; add to this the ability to travel to the other side of the planet in a short period of time, which enables a virus like this to spread like wildfire. Who it's killing (or should I say 'culling') are the weakest amongst us, genetically-speaking: your genes either render you highly susceptible to it, or your genes just make you weak in general, you get sick, you die. Note how small a percentage of actual infected people actually die; the rest may in cases take a while to recover fully, but they are now proven to be better suited to remain in the gene pool.

Some research articles I read even detailed an r0 of even 6-8. Of course, this isn't practical to estimate because the pandemic needs to be over to fully calculate CFR and r0.

There are countless studies that show that having a respirator is effective against viruses because their mesh doesn't allow anything in or out except air.

What's so bad about wearing a mask anyway? I wear one in shops, public buildings and at work when not at my desk. Advantages of the mask:

The things I listed are just scraping the surface. More and more evidence is showing it can impact the entire body and not just damage your lungs. Long term effects are still unknown but the average years of life lost is 10 for females and 15 for males. Overall I hope you take care of yourself and your loved ones. I am not saying you should wear a Hazmat suit but exercise common sense. Avoid crowds/hosting large gatherings, when you're going inside a store please wear a mask (and if you want take it off after you leave). It's just courteous to the elderly/vulnerable especially if you are living in a city with a spike in cases. I am not American but I live in a country that has done a very good job at weathering this pandemic for the most part.
