If humans currently do 50% of the work and machines the other 50%, and the machines get better and can now do 90% of the jobs then we've grown the output of our civilization five fold. If they can do 99% of the work then we've grown 50 fold. This of course is a simplistic model that didn't take into account building the machines and retaining the humans.

My point is that automation is not bad. The only difficulty is changing things to adapt to automation and the only danger is that the wealth of automation concentrates into hands of a few individuals. A Universal Basic Income will become a necessity.

Even if you had a star trek replicator it still needs energy, there is only so much fuel (nuclear, fusion) and so much surface area for solar etc. this becomes even more of a problem if people can live forever.
