How does/sci/ feel about the way math is taught in public school?

But without it you can't learn the "real" one.

I was extremely surprised to learn that American public schools don't even teach basic p-adic theory and elementary topology to its students. May that be the reason why they're so stupid?

Math teachers are garbage, almost to a man.
I was in the bottom math class and the teacher would just assign exercises, not check if we were able to do any of them, we'd whisper to each other while he worked on something that interested him, and then we'd all leave.
This was my experience with essentially every high school math teacher. No one made any effort to understand what we were interested in or motivated by and then connect what we were learning to that.
I then later found out how good and important math is, learned it myself, and went back to university after my first degree (a humanities degree) to do a second degree with a math major.
Fuck jannies, and fuck teachers.
t. Person doing a math/education dual degree.
Fucking disgraceful and they all deserve to be in prison.

It's not the teachers' fault. Students simply don't care, and it's quite naive to expect them to care.

>it's not the teachers' fault
>they just don't bother to work out what the students care about and how to make math about that
Unbelievable.
How many things in the world are math related?
Practically everything.
What do you need math for?
Practically everything.
If they're in a math classroom, you can learn their souls and cause them to want to learn.
What a shameless fucking attitude.
Imagine if I became a drill instructor and said "oh well you know the men aren't really into soldiering".
Fuck that.
Imagine if I was a mechanic and said "oh, well, the car doesn't really seem to already be working" and shrugged, then expected to be paid.

People are, at some level, a mechanical puzzle. You work out what their interests are and teach in terms of that. You work out what their motivations are and explain how what you're doing helps them achieve their motivations. If it isn't immediately obvious, you find a way.
What am I, the Michelangelo of teaching, or are you people just fucking lazy?
You learn their world to understand where authority derives from to them, and what they already have in terms of knowledge you can use to explain things.

I don't want to dox myself by accident, but I managed to teach high school math in terms of a very particular niche area someone was interested in, a sport they like, a particular game they're into. And not in a way as simple as just swapping words in existing problems, but by explaining the relation that the math we're doing has to the things they're interested in, to a fairly full on extent.

Students caring or not is not itself a fixed, unchanging, mysterious thing that teachers can reasonably claim to have no agency over. Unless they want to admit that they're braindead fuckwits who should be unemployed, or working happily in another field.

>it's not the teachers' fault that they made no effort to understand the minds they were supposed to be transmitting knowledge to
>it's not like they were getting fucking PAID to do a JOB they were RESPONSIBLE FOR. It's not like teaching is a BIG FUCKING DEAL or anything. It's not like your choices as a teacher change peoples' lives for decades. It's not like it approaches parenting in terms of its importance and impact. It's not like you're being a model of behaviour that will stick with them for life.
>Yeah, just say "fuck it" and ask to be paid while doing nothing.
>It's not like it's these peoples' futures are on the line or anything.

>It's not the teachers' fault.
Well why are you in a position of responsibility and authority then?
If it's not your fault when they don't get there, why should they give you any authority and trust to begin with?
The officer is responsible for the conduct of his men.
You are responsible for the performance of your students.
If they're bored, make it interesting.
If they don't see the point, cause them to see the point.
Earn your legitimacy.

Fine in the UK.

If you like it, you do it and enjoy it outside of school.

Maybe maths can be made more to show how useful it can be with real world applications in school that's as far as my critique goes though.

But really, if you are a dumb cunt or simply have pleasures elsewhere then you just show the basics and leave the rest to those who either have an affinity to it or not.

(supposedly) technical people do not know anything about public schools or teaching. there is a HUGE body of research about what works and doesnt work in education. The math curriculum in public schools is the result of a shit ton of trial and error. If you make any changes to it based on your retarded whims, you would definitely fuck it up.

That doesn't mean that there is no way to make kids smarter at math.

Imagine if you took a (reasonably smart) 5th grader, and you gave them a personal tutor who has a PhD, and you made them work on math for 5 hours every day for 3 years with no summer breaks. This would create an 8th grader who is an experienced mathematician that could probably contribute to some areas of research. The problem is that this is insane.

But there is atleast one famous modern mathematician that started this way.
