I think it could have happened. If it weren't for all the things getting in the way. If the economy collapses, if immigration sucks up all the funding to feed and house third worlders, it will never happen. All the countries that would have developed AGI are going to shit, there won't be any research done when everyone is starving and homeless, when crime rates are through the roof.
