>If you told someone with schizophrenia to kill themselves, and they did it, you should feel bad.
When did I say I did? The point is that everybody is told to kill themselves here, schizophrenic or not, and it's completely brain-dead to have expected otherwise.

>You encouraged this situation by trolling him and you're now trying to use the way you perceived his personality as justification for it. It's pathetic.
I never trolled him once, in fact I watched all of his videos and even thought one of them wasn't total shit. You can see my comment on his anime amv. Taking the moral highground like this only after he died is extremely pathetic, so it's bizarre you're using that word for me. His personality was self-absorbed, and he admitted it. Even more extreme, in his view, nobody else even existed. There is absolutely no debate there. While the other two adjectives are subjective, I would claim they're basically pleonasm naturally extending from his worldview.

You aren't a very bright human being, and there is no repair for you I'm afraid.

You literally said that you trolled him, that is what I responded to. You can pretend that you're just some random person who commented in place of the other person but I can tell by your typing style and by how defensive you are either the same person or a complete fucking retard that is incapable of following a simple conversation and gets upset about comments that weren't directed to them.
>The point is that everybody is told to kill themselves here
There's a big difference between telling someone to kill themselves in a heated argument and deliberately commenting on each post they telling them to kill themselves. This is what happened, look in the archive. Sue me if I don't think bullying an autistic schizophrenic person is just part of board culture. I understand your guilty about it, and you should be. You can remain upset at this fact or just admit you're a wretched little faggot, lying in hopes of washing your hands of it and crying argument from morality when you don't have basic decency. It's so gutless there's little wonder why some schizos stop believing that other people are real.

Now I got my answer. I'm not that guy. I came to this thread and read >>11492172 and took trouble with what you said there. I haven't used an emoji in the past 10 years of my life so I do not know what you mean by "typing style". "Pathetic" isn't even scratching the surface of your now obvious projection.

>There's a big difference between telling someone to kill themselves in a heated argument and deliberately commenting on each post they telling them to kill themselves.
Again, it's an anonymous imageboard. That's the beauty of it, I imagine even for Montano himself. Also did he ever actually namefag? I'm curious. This place wouldn't be the same, or really worth visiting at all, if there was some genuine moral burden on everybody's shoulders to be kind.

>Sue me if I don't think bullying an autistic schizophrenic person is just part of board culture.
I mean it is part of 4chan culture at this point. 4chan *arguably* killed pic related, because people trolled him into believing he was in a relationship with a girl that he was vaguely on his way to "visit" when he died if I recall. They also technically got him kicked out of his house, among many other things.

Yes, it's disgusting, yes my outrage over it was similar to yours when he died, especially because it's so stupidly ironic that they would sympathize with him like nothing happened after they killed him. I don't really see the same thing here tho.

>You can remain upset at this fact or just admit you're a wretched little faggot, lying [...]
Again, this sounds like major projection. Also ignoring everything I've said and calling me a wretched little faggot is pretty funny given your side of the argument. You're right about the last thing tho

It's cute you keep reusing my insults and then crying projection. Even your comments about projection are projection.
>genuine moral burden on everybody's shoulders to be kind
At no point did I imply that. I implied that you shouldn't deliberately bully autistic schizos by telling them to kill themselves every time they post a link to one of their videos. For someone who is 'totally not the person who did that', you sure seem quick to defend it.
>4chan *arguably* killed pic related
4chan isn't a single person, retard. The only person with some fault for that situation was the person who created the fictitious girl and trolled him. Plenty of people here respected Terry and would never wish him harm.
>I don't really see the same thing here tho

That's what projection IS, retard. When I say you're projecting by calling me pathetic, I am necessarily "reusing your insult".

>At no point did I imply that
Of course you did. You could be Montano for all I know; taking the moral highground like this puts a burden on everybody here.

>For someone who is 'totally not the person who did that', you sure seem quick to defend it.

I mean these are arguably the people that did him harm, by buying him a drumset, which notoriously got him kicked out of his parents house. Wishing him harm is mutually exclusive to actually doing him harm.

>That's what projection IS, retard I am necessarily "reusing your insult"
It's not necessary to repeat every insult I've said back to me, you don't need to do that in order to claim projection as I could know what you're referring to without being parroted. The reason you didn't do that is because you're actually projecting, you unoriginal fuck.
>taking the moral highground like this
This is such an idiotic statement. I'm not taking a moral high ground as a fallacy argument, it's simply my belief that this shouldn't have happened to him. It's like getting upset at someone for stating that murder is wrong and claiming they are taking the moral high ground.
>I could be talking to Montano
What's your point? Montano is most likely a corpse floating around in Lake Michigan.
>I mean these are arguably the people that did him harm
A person buying him a drum set also isn't 4chan, retard. Stop attributing the actions of individuals to that of a group.
>None of these are arguments

Of course that wasn't your point or else you would have said just that. We expect this to happen on 4chan, it was never in dispute. The act itself was in dispute and you claimed I was taking the moral high ground like that is an argument against it when it isn't. It doesn't mean anything.
>I'm doing exactly what you did in this post
Except I didn't do that at all since that post doesn't exclude the idea of a single person making most of the posts which appears to be the case. At no point did I imply 4chan was guilty for them, only the specific parties in question.
>Of course I do, I've repeated it in every post I've made
That isn't an argument. An argument is a clear view for consideration of something being right or wrong. You don't have a consistent view, you just randomly make things up and then ignore what you've said in the past. It's not more an argument than if you randomly generated your text.

Keep projecting your projection and playing 'I know you are but what am I', but you're an actual faggot and not one person would defend you if you killed yourself. It's people like you who make the world so terrible that it drives people to insanity, self obsessed scumbags who don't care about fact or truth, they simply want attention and will do anything to get it. In retrospect, what went wrong? How could this have been avoided, in principle?

Was there something that could've been done to control montano's efforts to make sense of his reality.

How might we construct a method to "solve" montano?

Might it have been possible to salvage his once fanatical commitment to the scientific worldview that he reluctantly abandoned as psychosis gradually took hold of him?

Recall that Montano was remarkably lucid until the bitter end, and more so than he'd been in the past.

Probably something dumb. It’s not like I think I had some magic words that would pull him out of his downward spiral. I would have just liked to talk to him—about his thoughts, experiences, interpretations, loneliness, disillusionment with even the idea of living on, anything really. His life.

My mind has a difficult time comprehending that if maybe I found him a month ago he had been a real human being that I could talk to, but now he just isn’t. I will never speak with him. No matter what impact any of his videos or writing have on me, he isn’t a real person that exists anymore.

In some way I’m afraid that I will follow his example. For the moment and past, I don’t have any obvious disorders, dysfunctions, and I have high aspirations for my life and work towards them. But I’m absolutely terrified that my mind will turn on itself and I could become delusional and suicidal.

And Mario later rejected his views in those videos. His justification for Open Individualism was based on reductive physicalism, which he later rejected in favor of Idealism. Why do you think he was right then but wrong later?

>Think about what defines your conscious experience.
I define my conscious experience as my "point of view", for lack of a better term. I am currently observing myself on /sci/ typing these words, existing as THIS particular human. This "thisness" is what I define as my "self".

>Read "A new theory of Open Individualism", it's a quick blogpost.
That article doesn't seem to rigorously show that OI is true though, just that Closed Individualism is on shaky philosophical grounds. He states that "although it seems like this qualia-bundle has partitions or boundaries, these apparent partitions are illusions.", which is stupid. If you're going to argue that qualia binding is an illusion despite being directly observable, you might as well go full Dennett and argue that consciousness in its entirety is an illusion. Andrés Gómez Emilsson also wrote this article rejecting OI in favor of Empty Individualism:

"The Egg" just seems like a glorified form of Closed Individualism with reincarnation. If The Egg is true, you still have to concede that "you" are some entity that "moves" from lifetime to lifetime. The Egg doesn't seem particularly compatible with reductive physicalism or a block universe view of time, so you would probably have to concede some form of dualism.

>If you want a rigorous proof of OI read a serious treatment of it, like Daniel Kolak
I read the first few chapters of it, and none of Kolak's arguments made any sense to me. Would you mind giving a TL;DR? I've asked Open Individualists how they reconcile OI with the fact that I can directly observe being this particular human at this particular moment, and I've rarely gotten anything deeper than "It's just an illusion bro".

It's interesting the Mario is an idealist now, I actually am too. But idealism is totally compatible with OI. I dont see why he would reject OI after coming to accept idealism.

Ok, the question is what defines "me"? That is, the continuous experience of this consciousness. Two common answers are:
I am the collection of atoms in my body
I am the person with previous memories casually linked to me.

This is Closed individualism. It doesnt take much to see this view is non sensical. I could copy your atoms and make a clone of you. Despite having the same atoms and believing the clone is you, you wouldn't care if the clone got killed, his consciousness is different from yours. Alternatively, all the atoms in your bodies are replaced every seven years or so, but presumably the same conscious is in you as was in you 7 years back. So you are not defined by the atoms in your body. The blogpost refutes the casual chains of memory theory of personal identity

>> No.11513706

I'll read the link you sent, I wrote a paper once on how OI and EI are actually the same thing. OI just focuses on stable identity while EI focuses on experience. The way I see it, if someone believes EI to be true, they basically believe OI. I can share the paper with you if you want

>> No.11513730

Let me answer your question about OI, how come I can only feel like I'm me.

Imagine I split your brain in two, a hemispherectomy and put each half in a different body. Each body lives out their different lives and then I reverse the surgery and merge the brain again. The brain would realize that all the memories were not two different people but the same person from different perspectives. Like a security system with two cameras looking at each other.

"Your consciousness" only has access to the senses perceived by your body, if we were somehow able to merge brains you'd be able to sense the things I sense and the conscious would be "unified".

It might be worth adding that you dont have share the same consciousness as you 5 seconds ago, only the memories. This should at least make you an EI.

Also, Dan Dennett is an NPC.

I don't consider my identity to be either of those things. I consider my identity to be my particular locus of awareness, the "thisness" of my current experience. If I was directly observing existing in your body instead of my body, I would consider that to be a fundamentally different reality.

This would be evidence of Closed Individualism being false if it actually happened in reality. Although the furthest we've gotten is hemispherectomies on extremely young patients. It still might be possible to reconcile your anecdote with Closed Individualism though. Maybe your consciousness/soul only exists in one of the hemispheres, and the other becomes a P-zombie.

Beautiful and terrible. All of existence is about surplus and deficits, growth and decay, change and stasis. By it's very nature, existence necessitates change, and change necessitates destruction and degeneration (and also creation). We are all part of a universal historical process that is much bigger than any of us as individuals. The same is true, not just of us, but the whole world around us and everything that exists. And I think that is a very beautiful thing.

Especially given that he probably grew up bilingual — if it weren't for this thread I would've never guessed he was born to Mexican parents in the US. This board gets a ton of dumbass attention-seeking schizos but Montaño seemed like a cool guy with potential who just needed some guidance to get back on track. I'm not saying we should pamper to random strangers but at times like these, I wish this board wasn't infested with fucking normies and edgelords (pic related). Leave those for /b/ and /pol/, we're a blue board ffs.

for one he could have gone to school for maths or physics.

I'm trying to recreate my entire undergrad experience of physics and math double major but with montano as a colleague. Man it would have been fun. Tho I had chubby qtpi gf through out college, a year younger than me that studied physics as well. Thats the fucked up thing, like looking back I can't believe that really happened, the way it did. She's basically disappeared since graduation. IDK, Montano is on to something with the hyperspace gf.

Man this shit is fucked up. I've watched all of his videos, checked in on his blog frequently. It was obvious he was inching further and further into schizo territory.

I can't help but think we failed him. Who besides us could have done anything? How can you possibly expect his Mexican normie family to even remotely grasp what this kid was dealing with?

I've been in that place Montano was in, and I clawed my way out of it, just barely. I doubt he would have listened to me, because he would have thought I was just another NPC sent by the simulation, but I should have at least tried.... fuck

How long does it take for bones to decompose underwater? Does sediment prevent someone from finding his bones? I'm curious as to whether or not his remains could be recovered in principle.

I have never confirmed this myself, so I was just making sure. Again, I if his remains (bones) are currently recoverable, in principle (such that they can be feasibly detected). Further, I want to know if sediment would accumulate such as to make this difficult or impossible, on ordinary timescales at the depths of the lake he targeted (pic rel).

Well we know that it does not decay bones in all cases, there are obviously bones and fossils in the water. It is a freshwater lake, the person I mentioned before has not been found. Variability in the temps can change this. The body bloats as it decays, and causes it to float, so assuming that animals did not eat his entire body it will float and bob around the ends of the water, perhaps a pier or beach. Assuming the flesh is eaten or it no longer floats, it would be covered by sediment and stationary where the body sunk, and likely not recovered easily with current technology, nearly impossible unless they know the tides and where he jumped off. I am not sure about the effects of the temperature on the body and bloating (on lake Michigan), its possible it sunk and when it gets warmer it will float to the top assuming again that animals have not eaten him yet.

Did he have real friends? Having real friends that would have made him reluctant to go off into other worlds may have helped. Is there someone else like this around chicago? I will gladly be friends with them, to help prevent such a tragedy.

Pic related. He never made any friends at school, although he apparently was friends somewhat with Andrés Gómez Emilsson.

>Is there someone else like this around chicago?
There are a number of LessWrong/Slatestarcodex/Effective Atruism meetups in areas around the world, which includes Chicago. Although I am unaware of any evidence that he ever attended such a meetup.
