The way I see it, on a scale of 1-10 of severity, if the necessary precautions are taken, this outbreak would be a 4 or 5. If no action is taken, this shit would worsen significantly to 6 or 7, but luckily we live in an advanced enough society that I think enough shit is happening that despite the incompetence, shit should end up relatively OK.

Any recommendations on what to do if you have primary ciliary dyskinesia (immotile cilia) and you contract coronavirus?

I know the virus is present in my state and the number of cases is expanding. I've been following hand washing guidelines and generally haven't been too concerned but now I'm beginning to worry a little. I'm very susceptible to pneumonia, typically I recover with antibiotics but typically the infections I've gotten have been bacterial, not viral or stemming from complications related to a viral infection. I also don't typically take a rescue inhaler or nebulizer treatment or a bronchodilator when I'm healthy either so I don't have any medication on hand or prescriptions. I'm slightly worried if I get the virus it will delay my access to medication since they don't want you to visit the office and then if I'm quarantined I can't actually pick up my prescriptions and nobody will bring them to me if I'm infected.
While I don't think the odds are super high that I can die I think the risk is significantly elevated above the general population and I'm looking for advice.

>> No.11465123

My recommendation is to stay quarantined.

There's not enough studies out yet to say how it'll effect people with ciliary dyskinesia specifically, but I'd say that you're the type of person can kill.

Call your primary and ask them for general medical advice.

If you do show signs or symptoms. Go to an ER. I feel like ERs are probably blowing up with bullshit cases right now, but you definitely have a legitimate reason to go.

Get a respirator mask if you can.

Good luck out there anon

I've been thinking about the true mortality rate and the diamond princess produces a fantastic case study. We know that everybody on board was tested so there are no cases of people having too mild symptoms that they never get detected so the infected number is the TRUE number unlike the case for nations.

It currently has a deathrate of 1% but taking deaths as a percentage of recovered + dead produces a deathrate of 2% which is likely to be much more accurate and we can predict that ~ 14 people should die out of the 700 infected when all is said and done. I don't know what the age distribution of the diamond princess is but I'm guessing its on the older side which mean the true deathrate is going to be at most 2%.

This also seems to suggest that south koreas reported infected cases would be somewhat close to the actual number of infected in south korea which is inline with the extensive testing that south korea has done for the virus, while in italy ATLEAST 40k possibly much more are infected which is inline with there policy of not testing people unless they are at the hospitalisation stage.

Vaping weed properly with a vaporizer (the one that fills a big bag) and without tobacco, if you're the only one to use it and clean it properly with ethanol and such after/before use shouldn't be a problem.

Tobacco? Fuck no. Now would be a good time to kick the habit. It's too late for me as I have heart complications so I'm going to die anyway since ACE2 is predominantly in heart (and kidney and testicle) cells, but I hope people who still have a future ahead of them realize it's not too late to quit now and eliminate a major risk factor before they catch it, this bug loves laying waste to lung cells through literally an arsenal of mechanisms so just fucking quit.

Some numbers add up. China is a country with 1.3 billion people. A couple Chinese tourists and workers managed to spread it since maybe november in countries everywhere and that was enough to throw all of these countries into a crisis. But China itself has a bigger population than the EU, it's as big as multiple countries. It should have experienced outbreakes in more than one place. Even more so since the initial outbreak was, according to media, ignored and kept under wraps. But apparently only one province was shut down and it didn't spread to anywhere else. That's as absurd as treating the EU as one country, saying Italy is the hotspot and then shutting it down and it never appears anywhere else.
Currently the Chinese outbreak topped out at below 100k with 1 digit new infections per day now, when the country has 1.3 billon people and it could probably spread freely for more than two months in the entire country, but in the rest of the world every other country expects 70% (i.e. millions) infection levels? Closing down Wuhan wouldn't do jack shit. It would have popped up in every province and every major city of China in the same way it pops up in every small country worldwide now.

I realized my calculation* is too crude. It's using median times, but should use distributions instead. Both for detection to death and infection to detection. The latter is not implemented even in this crude form. This means that to the degree this is accurate, it represents the number of infections at least 5 days earlier than the give date (5 days is median time from infection to emergence of symptoms). I will stop doing this now.

Were they all tested? I thought the quarantine failed so they eventually got everyone off the ship and flew them out.

Anyway the problem is there isn't a true mortality rate. It widely varies based on how well you can treat the infected population. Treating a few hundred on a cruise ship is easy. When hundreds of thousands are infected nationwide the hospitals are going to have to choose who live and dies.

Won't matter. An absence is an absence. Even doctor's notes don't work -- I racked up 5 points in the first two weeks of this despite having doctors notes for the entire time. I have to get official medical leave to avoid getting points, and that's a right bitch to get even in the best of times when you have a clean diagnosis.

Doctor still won't put me on the test list. Wants me to finish the antibiotic treatment, wait another week and a half. It's been five days since I started it and it hasn't responded yet... I know it wouldn't be cured in five days, but everything I read everywhere says I should start feeling better 2 to 3 days after starting antibiotics. I feel worse 5 days after than when I started.

At this point I feel like I need to start anonymously calling up corporate HR. Letting them know, I know I'm endangering people but literally you've got me up against the wall with a gun to my head. My options are risk the doctor being incorrect, which seems more likely by the day, and continue to expose everyone I work with, or quit. Quit right as a recession -- or depression -- seems poised to hit the entire economy, and lose my medical coverage for the illness I definitely have that may or may not be something serious.

What responsibility? I neither made this policy nor chose to have the illness I currently have.

It's not even my manager's fault. They literally have no leeway with which to excuse an absence. All absences must be reported, and all absences must be pointed. That is the policy, and there are no exceptions.

Prior to this incident, I had two points from absences relating to a workplace injury last year, and two half points from being late. Nine points and you're out. It takes a year for them to fall off. Had I not been late those times, I could put off going to work for one more day... which would not make the difference.

Short of not working for this garbage ass company I don't see what else I could have done.

It's still good practice to prevent the spread as much as possible, but because the CCP fucked up so big, that's "only" to flatten the curve rather than to have any hope of containing the virus, because it had already spread across the world thoroughly by the time they finally admitted it existed and was happening.

as far as i know there have been zero coronavirus deaths to date of someone less than 10 years old. this is either because children are more likely to have coronavirus antibodies (1/3rd of all coronavirus cases traditionally are children), which doesn't seem like it actually explains anything, or the very antibodies that protect you from most other diseases are somehow particularly harmful for this one

Or maybe the lesson was how to use an outbreak or even make an outbreak happen for political purposes or rather sheer survival (for party officials).

That's a given. US, especially, is fucked because of the health care system in place. Currently, health care system is all about making money and less about fighting diseases and making decisions that based on what's best for the community. This is why there's been an abysmal amount of testing. Cities, in some countries are running more tests than whole of the US.

America is becoming what they'll probably end up calling a post-developed nation. Crumbled infrastructure, automated government services, no manufacturing or innovation, serf labor force, minimal literacy.

>US, especially, is fucked because of the health care system in place. Currently, health care system is all about making money
I agree, but that's not the end of it. This goes beyond the profit centric and byzantine organization of the US healthcare system. Most western states are so hollow that everything from local and national governments and institutions top to bottom are too sclerotic to mobilize against this in a timely and effective manner.

I think that I contracted this here in the states. I looked through the symptoms of the virus and they differ from source to source but most sources agree that the main symptoms are fever, cough, and shortness of breath. I learned weeks later that there were outbreaks close by. Throughout the greentext, keep in mind that I'm a healthy, active, 24 year old male in a near-stressless upper middle class suburb. I've had a kidney infection one time that resulted in me being ill for about 4 days but other than that, I've never been sick for longer than about 2 days. I do not use drugs and I do not smoke and I very rarely drink. I work one job and attend University two days a week. This takes place last month.

>mom no feel good be sick with cough for 4 days
>come home from work
>mom puking upstairs
>hold hair back like idiot
>said she has been coughing a lot and the phlegm causes her to be nauseous

>mom goes to doctor and returns saying that she was diagnosed with a lung infection
>shit this is bad
>okay whatever, i never sick, how long can it last?
>4 days later
>cough very bad, waves of chills, and fever, pounding headache, fatigue like no other, muscle soreness (mostly in my lower back and arms), appetite non-existent, drinking a gallon and a half per day and still thirsty. using nyquil to sleep so i don't wake up in middle of night
