No if you're stupid enough to be a truck driver youll never make it in stem, maybe get an art degree and go work as a waiter or wipe elderly peoples asses while getting bossed around by a doctor who was smart enough not to falI for the 'blue collar' meme

Lol art degree
Don’t waste time on such trash, learn how to photoshop and htmlcss then become a web designer
A private driver would work as well

Stupid cunt, if you're in america learn carpentry. You'll probably even make more money.

The only thing automated trucks will replace is longhaul Freeway/highway freight deliveries. Just learn to operate off-road trucks, like logging or dredging or something. Getting an AI drive on flat, even, well marked roads is one thing, but not time soon will he have trucks that can navigate unknown and variable terrain and obstacles. Thats where you come in.

Long haul or local?

I know your question was directed at OP, but I'm pretty sure longhaul trucks will be the first to be automated.

Photoshop could be obsolete in 10 years. There is no guarantee in html and css, as AI is advancing in those fields too. Programming should be still viable field, but most likely only few of currently used languages. Similarly, as Java risen, now due of mess what Oracle did, it becomes less and less popular. C language should be still actual. Also, there will still be bunch of systems which will need maintenance, thus there still be some demand for old programming languages, hard to say at what scale, and how well paid.

About getting replaced by self driving truck, someone still have to maintain and fix, so should be some place for qualified mechanic. Similarly for other things, which need maintenance and fixing, like laying pipes, replacing windows, roofing (tornadoes still are a thing).

Basically, you need some backup plan at all times. To get STEM degree, don't know is it worth, if in US, it could be a bit expensive. And question about, will someone will hire you: it depends. If you will be best deal they can get at moment, then yes. Companies in general, they are about profit. If they see that they can get profit from you, they will employ you.

If you had the intelligence required for STEM you wouldn't be a truck driver in the first place.

sort of, under optimum conditions. with a human overseer watching

They will need human driving foremen. One human per 10 self-driving trucks, to take over when AI is confused or in extreme safety regions (schools, parades, etc).

full automation is a fucking meme and anyone dumb enough ITT not to realize that is not giving good advice

here is a podcast with a guy that works with those companies:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQYSnlYTQyk

seriously.. computers are not fucking smart.. you have to tell them what to do and people are just not comfortable allowing the kind of losses it would take to get fully automated trucking.. therefore there will be a human in the loop for the foreseeble future

basically your job will just get easier as cruise control becomes smarter

but by all means study STEM.. ie programming but also study drawing and 3d modelling and just aim to do freelance.. getting a degree to work as a code monkey sucks and I would pick driving by myself anyday
