and? It's just electric cars. For a time the mighty USSR built more cars for year, and more fuel efficient cars at that, then the US. This did not help solve the USSR's problems. The same applies to rockets, nuclear weapons, pork, etc. Just having a lot of something does not itself constitute an investment in it. More volume made today just means less volume tomorrow. America's auto industry is greatly suffering from this problem because they sold so many cars new production doesn't make a lot of money.

The NSB's point wasn't so much that the US's research had shrunk insomuch as China's has grown, like Japan and Germay did postwar and like the USSR did during the interwar period. Even if the US's did shrink, it doesn't matter much when ultimately the quality science that results in new things ("innovation") happens here because we have academic freedom and academics are not bound to state employment or state directives as they are in Europe or Asia. This is a known problem in countries like Germany, Russia, China and Japan but they can't change things because it would upset the social contracts there. This is where it evolves into a philosophical question, moreso than a money dump truck question.

In which case America has the V-22, F-35, and NIF among others. China has been unable to copy all three with 100% functionality. China did build a bigger hydro dam than us, but they also have dust storms while we got ours under control.

China only has 40% of the UN's support, themselves and Russia, since the UNSC is what actually matters. It's here their lone 20% stake is enough to stall things because they can veto anything. Blame Nixon.

As for religious doctrine, secular morals, and population all of that China hasn't won on because they can't just keep replacing everyone with unlimited growth. This is the exact sort of problem Japan had in the late 80s.

WTF is this? Some soviet statistics? American families had several cars per family. Soviet families were several families per car.
There's a soviet joke about it:
A soviet delegation visits Ford factory.
"Whose factory is that?" - "That's Ford's factory"
"Whose cars are those?" - "They belong to the workers of the factory"
American delegation visits soviet car factory.
"Whose factory is that?" - "That factory belongs to the workers"
"Whose car is that?" - "That's the car of the director of the factory"

Friend of mine did his master's in Australia. When they had group meetings, Chinese colleagues were forbidden to participate.

It's not because going back to china is lucrative, rather it's a common pattern amongst all 3rd world dwellers, including indians, middle easterners, and most south americans. It's because back home is infinitely cheaper and the people are usually much better than the cold and backstabbing murrican't (except in the case of china, where the fact everything is played through shows of power and influence, they can rely on significant family dominance for similar benefits). Thus, they collect money in the states for as long as they can bear it, then go back to a country that has higher life standards for those who aren't poor, escaping the rat race.
