Yup. I think the main reason for this is that the American highschool system is so bad that the unis have to spend the whole time teaching the student hs stuff. But American graduate schools outperform European ones because they're run by guys who are better at business and they hire the smartest graduates from countries with better education systems. In my field the absolute smartest guy would be someone who did undergrad in the Netherlands and then joined the top lab (also run by a Dutch guy) in the US.

American universities have stronger ties to industry. Academically, Europe has always been stronger. I.e. go to America if you want to easily get a good job and go to Europe if you want to do research.

We'll, the real problem is that the American universities pay a living wage PhD stipend. If euro unis would pay non-euro PhD students a living wage, then people would start travelling there too. Germany sort of does. You can get good funding with the DAAD. But the Americans pretty much give anyone $30k, while most euros get a bit over half that. Of course, it doesn't really make sense for a German uni with grad students who've gone to gymnasium, taken difficult classes in uni, and taken advanced classes in their MScs to pay Americans with BScs to come to their institutions, since they'll just be liabilities that they have to educate the whole time. I just got back from a 6 month internship in Germany and it was exactly like that. There was me (a Canadian PhD student (similar to an American)) and an American girl from new York. The rest were Germans, eastern euros, and French. And the poor euros were constantly having to explain shit to me and the American girl. I am very grateful for their patience.

I don't think chemistry has excellent salary prospects, but it's a very well-respected field in Germany and Switzerland, and if you really boss our and plan your career well, you can get good jobs in those countries. I am interested in improving my theoretical chemistry knowledge (particularly with regards to electronic structure theory (aka quantum chemistry/molecular quantum mechanics/whatever you want to call it)) as I am interested in specialized inorganic spectroscopies. In that field, the Europe is infinitely better than america, particularly in the Netherlands and Germany. Pure chemistry is definitely more interesting than pharmacy, but if I were you I would go into pharmacology. Pharmacology is a very interesting and exciting field and it benefits from all the huge advances that are being made in biology/biochemistry these days. Pure chemistry is a mature field and the interesting parts are those that have a great degree of overlap with physics. To be frank, I don't really think anyone should study pure chemistry unless they want to be a hardcore organic wizard. If you're interested in the the "real" pure chemistry, you should go for a degree in "chemical physics". If you're interested in drugs, you should study pharmacology. If you're interested in being a master synthetic chemist, then study pure Chem. Biochem, however, is also okay for synthesis, but imo it's too general and pharmacology is a better major if you actually care about the biological action of the molecules you synthesize.
