It is actually quite easy. President Trump recently considered not letting Chinese students study here. This is important because these gaokao dropouts are the only ones actually paying full price (you know that scheme were universities cost like 100k a year but if you are in the state then through "aid" your real cost is like 5k? Well, that 100k figure is to squeeze money out of chinese people). It is through this squeezing that universities can actually afford their lavish spending, as in-state students are well priced to pay normal compensations. Take this out, and you kill them.

The fact that Trump was considering it tells you all you need to know about how easy this would be. The only reason he decided not to pull the trigger was because this would actually kill the entire ivy league and top state universities with no survivors. But Trump is the least radical republican ever in office so of course he would go easy fearing economic ramifications, put an actual reagan in charge and bye bye universities.

I got a physics degree, moved to a different country to do a physics PhD, then moved again twice for different post-doc appointments. I worked smart and hard during the early years, to get me to a position where I'm good at what I do. Now I can easily pick off grants and new jobs, and plan my work ahead so I can high-ball my efforts. I takes me half the time to get shit done, and I have my 9-4 job. I wouldn't say my publications and my science is shit, but it's not exquisite work either. It's just the right amount of 'nice' that impresses funding bodies and lets me keep my lifestyle.

Then I realized most papers if not all are being churned out as graduation requirements instead of genuine pursuit of knowledge.
