Yes. If you're under 130, you will never have a chance at making it in pure math. Even the 130s are pushing it; you'll have to work twice as hard as your peers and will never amount to anywhere near as much. Math is really a 140+ game.

You can be an excellent engineer with 120-130, certainly above average in your field, but you can only be a mediocre mathematician or physicist with that IQ. Pick you battles wisely.

Truth is math academia is infinitely more competitive than any industry field, and you have to be an unrealistic superhuman anomaly to make it. Genuine interest means nothing if you don't have the physical hardware in your thinking organ (read: IQ) to be competitive in that field. This is the sad reality of having above average but nonexceptional IQ; you're just smart enough to see that lofty abstractions are beautiful and alluring, but not smart enough that you could ever support yourself studying such abstractions. 115-135 IQ individuals are cursed to a life of fiddling with the trivial derivatives of products from greener pastures just over the horizon, that nobody around them can even see, much less long for.

math undergrad is extremely general and a solid education for almost anything.

You'd be better off doing applied math and using honors courses/courses meant for pure math majors to fill up your pure math requirements. At my uni, you can go through the entire pure math major and only one or two classes will ever require you to write a line of code. You'll have a skillset about as marketable as an art major's. Sure, you can argue that pure math makes it easier to learn the trivial brainlet skills engineers and CS majors walk out with on your own time, but if that's the case why not just cut out the middle man and learn to code in that time if you're gonna have to anyway? If your IQ is high enough for pure math, you'll roflstomp all the /g/ tier retards in an applied math or engineering/CS department.

You can be kind of slow but well trained and moderately capable and find a job in industry; there's literally millions of openings. To make it in pure math, you have to be one of the top fifty or so people on the PLANET in your particular field; you're basically trying to make it to the olympics, but nobody tries to argue that genetic limitations can't keep people out of the Olympics, and everyone agrees that spending your youth training for professional sports when you're clearly not exceptionally talented is delusional. Stop giving brainlets false hope. IQ is certainly flawed, but it's one of the most robust, reliable, and well tested metrics in psychology. It's essentially as good as it gets. And even if IQ is garbage, heritable cognitive abilities are very real, not everyone is created mentally equal. thats not what I'm saying, what I was saying if you had read my follow up post is that "the best way to measure your ability at math is by doing math and seeing how good you are at it, not by taking an iq test." Of course cognitive differences exist. We just don't have a good psychological test to measure them. If OP takes a iq test and gets a low score, he could be discouraged from doing mathematics even if he is naturally talented at it, because iq test scores don't predict mathematical ability for individuals.

The reason people on /sci/ focus on iq tests is because they want to feel like they're smart regardless of the fact they have accomplished little

you can be smart and accomplish little though. just like you can be tall but never play basketball. sure its tokenism and idolatry but the soul-crushing truth is that we dont really dont get to choose our destiny. if you dont have the genes theres no sense in trying because youll never make it. if you do have the genes, why bother? you dont have to prove youre smart and even if you tried you didnt really earn shit because you did nothing to deserve your genes. we have seen self-determination for the lie it is and now society suffers

I'm actually scared to officially test my IQ because knowing it won't really help me. I can estimate it to within half a standard deviation or so by comparing myself to my peers in pure mathematics. Regardless, I still believe in at least some form of biological determinism.

Except he made good points when he wasn't going on a cumbrain rant. Mathematical talent is as hereditary, scarce, and unevenly distributed as athletic talent. Do the undergrad, hard work and dedication can almost certainly get you through that. Just be aware that your genes have determined your success beyond undergrad and plan accordingly; don't invest too deeply in pure math because you most likely will not be able to support yourself doing that.

Except we didn't. Many people who actually did an undergrad in math have warned you that going any further than that is unrealistically difficult. Nobody is saying not to do a math undergrad; most people can work through undergrad math one way or another. It's a career in math that you should be as cautious about pursuing as you would be about professional sports.

Most Nobel prize winners are low IQ experimentalists and don't have sufficient GPU to handle real abstraction. They stayed in their lane and succeeded, whereas pursuing something above their paygrade would have made them nobodies with a handful of low impact publications in literally who journals. Pick your battles wisely.
