for CRS missions they usually do a disposal burn to target an atmosphere.
For this misison they painted the bottom 1/3rd of the stage grey to test a different thermal regime to keep fuel heated a bit longer - this is something they want to test for DoD direct-GEO-insertion missions which require 12ish hours of coasting without freezing the RP-1 fuel, so they might keep it around a few orbits more today.

The Shuttle and Buran don’t really count, they both had orbital manoeuvring thrusters but lacked any serious form of propulsion. Buran is closer to a second-stage because the Energia core can be considered the first-stage but the Shuttle was a 1.5 stage architecture, with the SRBs being 1/2 a stage and the Shuttle/tank being the first stage. Also the Shuttle ignited its engines on the ground like a first-stage so... In conclusion, I’ve never heard someone refer to the Shuttles as second-stages.

So far Raptor is actually the more powerful engine, as it's been fired to 100% thrust whereas BE-4 has only ever been fired up to 70% IIRC. Furthermore they apparently think they can push Raptor up to 2400 kN per engine, which would be equal to BE-4, yet in a much smaller package, not to mention at higher efficiency.

No reason to 3D print is it isn't faster or better. Superdracos don't have to deal with high chamber pressures or oxidizing environments and don't even have pumps. 3D printing works best if you're making a part that you're only going to make a few of ever, because instead of spending $500 million on a production line for that part you spend $1 million on a 3D printer. However Raptor is already being made at a pace that those in old-space would call mass production, and is well past the point at which 3D printing it would be an advantage.

As of tonight, the Star Hopper is THE MOST advanced flying rocket on the planet. Everything begins here. The SLS is now up against a seriously dangerous clock.

If Elon's timeline holds in them doing a 200M hop in the next 2-3 weeks, that's going to start changing the game rapidly. This pace would mean New Sheppard altitude within the next 2-3 months aka October-ish and F9 altitude + reentry by end of the year by Christmas. Given that Bridenstein said that SLS launch window is slipping into Q1-Q2 2021, this gives SpaceX a full year to test, build, fly, and test more until they have a vehicle that is human ready for Moon & Mars.

I would NOT be surprised if by Q1 to Q2 2021, in the same relative ballpark of the SLS Demo Mission, they land the Starship on the Moon and put a fucking Tesla on the lunar surface with FDS, solar panels, and a Starlink adapter that's pointing to the LEO constellation in orbit that would live-stream 4K content from Luna. This sounds ridiculous, but they put a fucking car in a billion year orbit around the Sun for the maiden flight of the Falcon Heavy--so I expect them to do something equally ridiculous for the true maiden (Moon Injection) flight of the Starship.

At this point? Yeah. SLS has been over a decade and half in the making, recycling well over 50% of the hardware from the Space Shuttle era, and has been massively over budget with no actual launch other than a large series of static fires and booster tests. That's fine and all, but with no actual fully configured flight vehicle reaching orbit, they are in no better shape than Blue Origin who've done a whole lot of static fires and test fires on a stand with their New Glenn BE-4 engines. Though I imagine that even with the crazy slow pace that BO is taking, they are more likely to get a vehicle built, static fire approved, launched and then landed on a drone ship out at sea before the SLS launches viable payload to LEO.

And speaking of LEO payloads, it blows my mind that a rocket as powerful as the SLS is on paper and as friggin' huge as it is expected to be, that it can only take 95 tons to LEO. What the actual fuck.

Thanks. I wonder how far you have to be from the pad in order to send a drone up. Like, maybe move back 1km and send a drone up with a 4K camera that has a telescopic lens mounted on it pointed at the Hopper. That way you can get a top down footage of the vehicle, giving you footage that isn't obscured by the exhaust plume and dust.

drones are forbidden in the area. They're not allowing FAA permitted users either. Kites are allowed however :^)
That's how one person is getting aerial shots
