for CRS missions they usually do a disposal burn to target an atmosphere.
For this misison they painted the bottom 1/3rd of the stage grey to test a different thermal regime to keep fuel heated a bit longer - this is something they want to test for DoD direct-GEO-insertion missions which require 12ish hours of coasting without freezing the RP-1 fuel, so they might keep it around a few orbits more today.

The Shuttle and Buran don’t really count, they both had orbital manoeuvring thrusters but lacked any serious form of propulsion. Buran is closer to a second-stage because the Energia core can be considered the first-stage but the Shuttle was a 1.5 stage architecture, with the SRBs being 1/2 a stage and the Shuttle/tank being the first stage. Also the Shuttle ignited its engines on the ground like a first-stage so... In conclusion, I’ve never heard someone refer to the Shuttles as second-stages.

The BE-4 is a technical marvel in itself. I'm not denigrating the hardware. Especially given that it's performance compared to the Raptor is greater. Still, a FFSC that lifted a vehicle ~20 meters, over to the left, and then did a controlled descent? That's huge.

I just really hope that they'll not do more very late night hops. Like the grasshopper, I hope they do more daylight hops moving forward--so that the public can see.

So far Raptor is actually the more powerful engine, as it's been fired to 100% thrust whereas BE-4 has only ever been fired up to 70% IIRC. Furthermore they apparently think they can push Raptor up to 2400 kN per engine, which would be equal to BE-4, yet in a much smaller package, not to mention at higher efficiency.

Huh I was talking with some NASA guys and they thought spacex was shit cause they thought their safety culture was shit. They thought they were crazy because they put some tanks way too close to their engine test stand. Maybe they were right. Although the tanks they were referring to seemed to be much closer than they were because of perspective.

No reason to 3D print is it isn't faster or better. Superdracos don't have to deal with high chamber pressures or oxidizing environments and don't even have pumps. 3D printing works best if you're making a part that you're only going to make a few of ever, because instead of spending $500 million on a production line for that part you spend $1 million on a 3D printer. However Raptor is already being made at a pace that those in old-space would call mass production, and is well past the point at which 3D printing it would be an advantage.

As soon as it goes far enough from the tanks, it can be put off easily. Burning fire isn't necessarily all bad. Once fire has burned in a spot it means the area is clear. So chances are the firefighters are waiting close by for the fire to spread closer to them.
