10824004 No.10824004 [Reply] [Original]

As much as I've tried to improve things such as my mathematics skills or academic performance I just seem to make any noticeable headway. I took multiple IQ tests and always place around 94-98. I thought that if I simply tried hard enough I could still be successful but I'm in my second try at Calculus and even with torturing and help from my professor I'm still doing horribly. I just don't have the capacity for critical thinking or complex mathematics. This fact depresses me because I really wanted to try and be successful so I could escape more poor financial situation growing up and do something meaningful with my life I could be proud of. But It seems I'm destined for some manual labor or low skilled employment. I don't know how to cope with the fact that I'm just a brainlet.

>> No.10824043

Maybe learn a trade, honest manual labor is definitely meaningful, probably more so than the work most academics are doing these days.

I guess that would at least be a way to make money. Though again, I really had aspirations to make something of myself, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. I wanted to do something I really cared about and enjoyed. I don't even know what trades I would like to do.

>> No.10824084

>>10824065
There's more to life than money and material possessions. We all have limitations, God doesn't expect us to do what is not possible for us. He only asks that we try our best with what we are given. Besides, if you really, truly do not have the capacity for critical thinking or complex mathematics you probably would not find jobs that require critical thinking or complex mathematics very enjoyable or fulfilling.

You didn't have thoughts like "I'm not capable of mathematics" when you first set out to improve your life. But when you encountered adversity this narrative popped in your head that says "I simply can't do it" when in reality you are on track and developing your ability. Math and martial arts aren't do different, neither are something you can sit through a class and learn or become proficient af after a lesson. They need to be practiced and trained. Let go of any preconceived notions or narratives about your ability, develop a mindset fixed on progression and development as opposed to static ability. And also take stock of how much you enjoy math. If it's not something you find fulfilling and enjoying there are plenty of opportunities to be successful in other fields. Best wishes my friend.

Ah, I get it. Masters degrees are generally super watered down.
>easier
I repeat, what subfields? Systems, sure. Complexity? Not even close lmao. Even reasonably “easy” things reach around lots of topics in pure mathematics. Classical SAT is easy, but modern research in lower bounds? In analysis in complexity? In lifting theorems? Novel results in circuit problems or in AC0? If they’re so easy, why don’t “proper” mathematicians like Wigderson have no answer/proof for them? What qualifies as “CS” that it’s easier than math and physics?

The reason I care so much is because half my papers were written in conjunction with a CS PhD student. This is more or less the norm. CS and math students generally work on the same problems, and to suggest that TCS is somehow “easier” than math is either saying one of the oldest studies in math (number theory) that contains a large volume of insanely hard open problems is easier than most other fields of math, or that TCS isn’t math (from combinatorics to analysis to geometry). Both of these assertions are stupid

OP I've failed it four times and finally got it. It took me so many tries to actually understand what I was doing wrong. To understand why I was having problems. All I needed as a brainlet was learn to apply it and understand it fully rather than by rote, i didnt get the unit circle, just memorizing
Im lucky my last professor pushed us to understand theorems and properly writing them as well as throwing in nuggets of history and bringing it all together
I may have failed so many times and it's embarrassing af, but I learned more about myself and habits and how to correct them to succeed.
Am I going to be a mathematical whiz? No
And I can accept that because I understand my limits.

Read about intelligence on https://supermemo.guru/wiki/Simple_formula_for_high_intelligence.. tl;dr, you can become a "genius" at any subject if you have an interest in it and are capable of the basics. It doesn't have to be STEM. There are tons of manual crafts in which you can become a genius.
Also, you won't get rich by learning math, unless you go the quant or elite coder route. The reason you can get rich from these is because you're participating in financial rape of the masses. If you want to be relatively well off doing something you love, start a business you care about.

Idk, I think this idea of “the other side has it bad” is massive cope both sides have about the other. One side looks at certain professions as “low” and the other looks at the alternative and memes “lol you make no money.” Neither are exactly true. The thing is that you ought to find out fast what you enjoy and spend all your energy pursuing it. There’s literally no reason to do otherwise. If that’s academics, then its a hard and competitive field, but if you really want to find your niche, you can, but you have to be aware that if you feel behind, it’s the type of thing you will have to work at constantly to keep up.

None of this is to suggest that struggling is bad; struggling at key points is imperative to real understanding and growth, but if you’re stuck on the rudiments all the time it can be tough to progress. On the flip side, if you wanna do something else, they come with their own set of challenges and obstacles.

I mean, it’s more or less true. There was a huge disparity between the masters students and the PhD students in my classes. My friends / colleagues have reported the same thing. Look at masters vs PhD level CS. The picture is like night and day. Masters CS students are brainlets who do applied mathematical techniques for some industry related venture versus students who are versed in actual CS as a discipline. They’re the people who sell you on the idea of CS as training for industry, as CS as basics for software dev and only useful for services. They aren’t representative of what CS is.

If you insist on continuing on the university route, just do CS or any engineering except electrical/mechanical and your average IQ shouldn't be a problem if you study twice as hard as anyone else.

As other anons pointed out, though, you'd probably be more in your element learning a trade. Even if you get the degree after years of arduous work, employers will quickly decide you're not worth their time if it takes you twice as long to solve problems and get shit done as your ~120IQ competition. Brainlets shittalk on software dev and then lump CS into it because undergrad programs have watered their curriculum down to cater to the laziest, most brainlet, most deadbeat "I-want-to-have-engineering-cred-without-doing-an-engineering-program" students ever. Don't get me wrong, there are good undergrad programs out there for both the more engineering or mathematical sides of the study respectively.

Also, I don't have anything against software dev / software engineering as a discipline. There are some insanely impressive and difficult projects out there that are the feat of lots of hours and intellect. I just think the average CS student doesn't want to do that / aspire to that and want respect and salary through association with much better engineers than they are. Then again, I see the same among many undergrad engineering students too.

Then OP would fail, either in undergrad, or, even if he pulled through the degree, as noted above, he'd flop in the job market. I remember an anon who claimed to have an IQ in the high eighties, who worked intensely and with a lot of outside help to get an engineering degree. His family was proud of him for proving the value of "muh hard work". He proceeded to fail at every job he worked because he was so much slower than everyone else; regardless of whether he got the job done or not, his IQ made progress take place at an unacceptably slow rate.

The genetic lottery is not fair. Not everyone can perform acceptably in thinking intensive jobs, just like not everyone can perform acceptably on a basketball court.
