We discuss research, offer advice (Just see your family physician), make fun of premeds, discuss residency and different specialities but we mostly shitpost

If you want to discuss vaccines, please make your own thread because it takes a lot of replies and the discussion degenerates.

>What's the best speciality for research?
Path, clinical lab, onc, rad/onc, anaesthesia

>What are the best specialities lifestyle wise?
Optho, derm, psych and rads

I walked away from a decent shot at med school (MCAT in the 30s, meh grades w/ highest marks in orgo/biochem, insane extracurriculars, nontrad, probably would have gone the DO route due to mediocre GPA) in order to go through flight school and become an airline pilot due to burnout with patient care and the US healthcare scene in general.

Am I an idiot or did I make the right decision?

can bones be permanently deformed through trauma without fracturing?

>> No.10700760

>>10700750
No. Trauma implies some sort of damage to the structure would be a fracture. You could, however, put a constant stress onto the bone and cause it to reform in weird ways. See Chinese foot binding for instance.

Bones respond to force and restructure appropriately in the direction that the force is applied. Check out Wolff’s Law.

What up bois. 6th year on urology rotation clerkship. I gotta say I saw a lot of dicks for 2 days. Saw an oleogranuloma operation. I bet 1st world countries have no idea what this is. Basically gypsies and other subhumans inject their penises and balls with paraffin and it forms foreign body granulomas. Their whole genitalia become big lumps. When this happens they have to cut out the affected skin around the dick and since there is no skin anymore they bury the penis inside the scrotum so he can piss standing up and have some kind of coitus.

I'm finishing up school now, which will cost me ~$40k in total, then I'll have a year or so as an instructor, where I make ~$45k/year, and once I get my 1500 hours I can get my Airline Transport Pilot and a job at the regionals, which nowadays start First Officers at $65k w/ a $10-15k signing bonus, and where salaries climb to ~$110k for Pilot in Command. From there, you gather hours for a job at a major (United, Delta, American, Southwest, JetBlue, Spirit, Frontier, Alaskan, Hawaiian, etc) which will start you in the $120k range for a first officer which will climb to $175k-$250k if you're a narrowbody PiC, and can go north of $350k if you're a widebody PiC. The money's fine, and while you're a bit more at the whims of the economy than a doctor would be, you also have union benefits, a pension, and free flights for you and all close family on whichever airline you fly for.

Not from US or UK, but I've done EM and Ortho.

From my personal perspective, ortho is the job for someone that does well under a lot of stress. They wear those lead costumes during surgery because they need to do x-rays, so the weight surplus and being more stressful than the other surgical specs (because you really have to do a good job measuring the angles and putting the bone together) makes it one of my least favorites.

EM was actually cool. Besides the occasional shit hit the fan situation, it's actually a chill spec and I've considered it for some time until I turned to family med. EM requires teamwork and fast thinking, as you might witnessed and it could be very stressful at times but overall it's a decent specialty.

keep talking shit. congrats on RN to MD (if you are actually doing it) and if you are, well, then you should remember the ridiculous "which is the most right" answer and the global knowledge one must have to pass the NCLEX-RN.

for someone who was taking community college foundational anatomy to then be in an acute care course, it's quite difficult. it isn't g-protein chain analysis difficult, it's a different skill set and perspective does help here. good look on step 1, and oh and fuck you. t. CEN

Thanks, really appreciate your input. The physical stress of surgery didn’t really occur to me to be honest. But it’s such a good point, I don’t mind that stuff now when I’m young and a bigguy4u but what about when I’m middle aged and doing this stuff. I wonder how people doing ortho find it in the long term, especially with long surgeries and long working hours.
EM is a good mixture of primary care stuff found in FM with the occasional blip of stress and excitement. Did you ever look into anaesthetics?
In the UK GP/FM it’s literally the smartest choice when it comes to money and work/life balance. You earn consultant pay after 3 years of training. What’s the point of earning big bucks as a neurosurgeon if you’re going to be in your mid 40’s before you enjoy any of it. How’s FM like in the US?

i would like some insight or a CT-scan i just made
some context :
i have some chronic pain on the lower/right side of the belly, i thought it was a transit problem associated with a transverse colon problem (it match the area)

Are acetaminophen and ibuprofen the ultimate meme drugs? These shitty pills don't do anything for pain even when taking higher doses. At best they might rid you of a mild headache but even that I'm skeptical of. The headache may just be fading away on its own with this snake oil doing nothing. I've got hidradenitis suppurativa and that's all they tell me to take for the chronic pain. Drug addled morons killing themselves with heroin and fentanyl have made it near impossible to get anything actually effective these days.

So I've been having some visual issues since having a panic/anxiety episode a few months ago. Optometrist gave me a clean bill but I still have issues. Today I was just drawing and I noticed I could see the purple and green patterns of my phosphenes on the paper in broad daylight. It was very faint but there. I know you can see phosphenes with closed eyes or in the dark but wtf does it mean if I can notice them during the day?

>Do a research degree

>Research probably isn't going to be a good long term career plan
So I'll do as best as I can this year and try and get a first class honours, I doubt it though.

My short term plan is to get a job next year as a lab tech or some lackey and eventually do a masters in something. Maybe try and work my way up to a research assistant or something but I know I'm going to need to do a unpaid internship somewhere first

I was thinking pathology. What are some good, practical post graduate courses/specialties that are worth considering? Had thought about doing another degree, but what's the point?

>> No.10713861

>>10713829
Yes it is legitimate. One of the most emotionally taxing specialization, stress and burnout is high. The nature of diseases is such that most of patients die, many patient’s family members blame you if things won’t go well. I think despite of all this it is one of the most interesting fields to get into, also there is not and probably will not be shortage of patients the way things are going.

Why are so many urologists Indian?
I mean, there are lots of Indian doctors anyway, but in urology they dominate on a whole new level. Almost every single urologist is an Indian (male). What is the explanation for this? Do they just like dicks that much?

>> No.10713946

>>10713939
Now that you mention it, it is true. My uro prof had two Indian residents, and this is in Romania kek. Haven't seen Indians anywhere else, probably they choose it because it's pretty easy if you don't get on a transplant team, and it also brings quite a lot of money.

Hello doctors of 4chan,
What's the worst that could happen after a hepatitis vaccination?

I know this general probably doesn't believe that vaccines can cause illnesses, but I'm sure you can at least recognize that some vaccines are more controversial than others - there is a debate about them, many claim they hurt them or their loved ones. e.g.
>MMR in toddlers > autism
>Gardasil in teenage girls > wheelchair bound
>Flu jab > worst flu of your life
>'adjuvants' in various vaccines > allergy to that protein
Even if you think it's bullshit, you at least can see that many claim these consequences form these vaccines.

So I guess what I'm trying to ask is, are there any such 'controversies' surrounding getting a Hep vaccine? As an adult male. Either A. Or B. Or combined? Any famous claims like there are surrounding the ones I listed above?

Is it too late for me? Turning 28 this year. Went to college to become a doctor, ended up graduating with a 2.8 gpa. Unemployed for a good amount of time, saved up some NEETbux. Got a good job rn working as a driver for a major package delivery company. Friend suggested I try nursing school, but as a male I'm not about to get laughed at. I want to try PA school now, turns out I need to enter a graduate program to even have a shot as my undergrad gpa sucks. Should I just accept my fate and try to work my way up this company? I also have minimal volunteering experience, some paid clinical experience, no research.
