It's not actually a problem with their understanding of electricity, it's a problem of figuring out how to hold the bulb, battery and wire to make a closed circuit.

Even fairly smart individuals who have never held a lightbulb before and aren't 100% confident in how the physical devices are set up could take a bit to figure it out. That doesn't mean they're incapable of working with the mathematical representations of these objects, which is a completely different skill set.
