Seeing as how before the modern surplus of food, this would likely occur fast, and may even have occurred in our evolutionary ancestors. Lack of appropriate nutrients will lead to a considerable disadvantage of survival of a child and may stunt development. This is cool, but not surprising.

The mother's immune system responding like this isn't absurd or anything; it really should have been expected.
First, you're dealing with the immune system's responses in tandem with breast feeding instead of anything related to the production of milk. Second, the immune response is to infection introduced to the mother's body (as what would normally happen). Third, it's well known that breast milk naturally contains a high amount of IgA immunoglobulins and other types of antibodies (mainly through the colostrum, milk after delivery) alongside many types of bacteria to foster the baby's immune system (one of the reasons why natural breast feeding is preferable). Secretion of immune response in the breast milk from these things should follow so that the breast milk is not cross-contaminated and does not foster negatively infective agents.
