you make it sound as if SLS cannibalizing other projects has been a recent thing.

>NASA and Congress now doubt that a SLS vehicle will be ready by 2025 for the Europa Clipper and are now exploring options like Delta and Falcon to launch the craft

I was going to make a pseudo-oldpsace shill post about how SpaceX isn't going to make it to Mars while "proven" agencies will do while never directly explaining why, but I want to save my brain cells for later.

>On 1 May 2020, NASA awarded a $1.79 billion contract extension for the manufacture of 18 additional RS-25 engines. Ars Technica, in an article published on the same day, highlighted that over the entire RS-25 contract the price of each engine works out to $146 million, and that the total price for the four expendable engines used in each SLS launch will be more than $580 million. They critically commented that for the cost of just one engine, six more powerful RD-180 engines could be purchased, or nearly an entire Falcon Heavy launch with two-thirds of the SLS lift capacity.
So this is the power of a nationalized space project.

Was that really 6 years ago... jesus christ... reading the Houston article is embarrassing...
https://www.houstonchronicle.com/nasa/adrift/2/
>proponents of the SLS point out that only four big engines need to be lit for its launch, whereas the Falcon Heavy needs 27.
>SLS won’t be ready to fly until the end of 2017
>In short order NASA has invested tens of millions of dollars into facilities at Michoud. One reason, of course, is to build SLS as quickly as possible.

>NASA’s Office of Inspector General has some grim news about the Space Launch System
>The report found that the cost of the Space Launch System had exceeded the congressionally mandated baseline by 33 percent by November 2019. The cost will exceed the baseline by 43 percent or more if the launch date of Artemis 1 is pushed back beyond November 2020. Since the launch of the Artemis 1 is now scheduled for some time in 2021, the Space Launch System is becoming a bigger problem than before.
>The NASA OIG report has several recommendations, which start with the space agency going to Congress and begging for mercy.
Just put it out it's fucking misery already. Jesus wept.

"Prophet!" said I, "thing of evil!—prophet still, if rocket or devil!
By that Strategic Plan that bends above us—by that Mission we both adore—
Tell this soul with sorrow laden if, within the distant Aidenn,
It shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Artemis—
Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Artemis."
Quoth the SLS "Pay Me More."
