Communication gap. Dumb people simply won't understand the decisions of a smart guy. So someone with an IQ only slightly above the average is better at leading a bunch of normalfags because they are closer to their level.

It may be that you can only meaningfully communicate with people that are 1-2 standard deviations away from you in terms of intelligence. If that's true, it's not surprising that someone with an IQ more than 2 standard deviations above the average won't get much out of a horde of brainlets (who probably just want to have sex with each other instead of completing the task anyway).
