Okay so today I learned a new way (or "derived" the old way?) to calculate the cross product of two vectors yesterday... we set up our two vectors as a 3x3 matrix with the unit vectors across the top and then calculated the determinant.

My first question is basically this: why does it work?

Secondly, what does it actually do? Like when I cross two vectors, what does the answer actually describe?
