Like Erdos, she could be dogmatic in her politics. "One day we were driving to Laguna Beach and stopped on the way to see the mission," said Vazsonyi. "Jo absolutely refused to go into the mission because she hated Catholics and there was an entrance fee. She said she's not going to support the Catholics. But Erdos had no hang-ups about this, so we went inside and he fed the pigeons with my daughter. Then we went on to Laguna and that's when the shit really hit the fan because they had only one room for Erdos. They didn't have two rooms for Jo and him. The manager suggested that they sleep in the same room. And Erdos got very disturbed, and said, 'That's impossible.' " Another time a couple arranged for Erdos and Bruening to go camping with them in the High Sierras. When Erdos found out that he and Bruening would have to share a tent, he went ballistic. "I can't do that," he ranted, "because she has a cold!" When his friends observed that she seemed quite well, he blurted out, "I can't do that because she is a woman!"

After months of following him around, Bruening told Vazsonyi's wife, Laura, that she was tired of being Erdos's chauffeur and was going to dump him. Soon she disappeared, and Erdos never mentioned her again.
