>The General Dynamics proposal brought forth the ultimate development of the original Atlas concept. A one-and-a-half-stage pressure stabilized stainless steel “balloon” tank 15 feet in diameter, 50% larger in diameter than the Atlas, would be powered by five Rocketdyne RS-27 engines, the same ones used on the Delta booster. The “half-stage” would drop off, during ascent, jettisoning four of the RS-27’s, leaving the remaining RS-27 as a sustainer.
