The example wants you to consider Facebook a category, with the objects being the people and they have an arrow between them if and only if they are friends with each other. More exactly, if A sees B in his friends list, there is one arrow f:A->B. If there are altogether 100 people in some friendslists, then there are 100 arrows.

In your model, the object is a set and there's only one function and, as such, each person (set element) can have at most one friend (and that's including one-self). It's not the right setup to consider.

What's the point eating a chocolate bar or going to a concert. Presumably you like to spend your time like that and that's reason enough to study category theory.
(Besides the type systems are a bit inspirsed by monads, but I also think the "Practical Category Theory" hype overstates this.)
