I personally don't buy into the bioweapon narrative, but the narrative is that it was originally intended for use against Hong Kong and China, so that the PLA could intervene in the name of "containment" and then just never leave. If that's the truth, then this is the perfect biological weapon: spreads rapidly, kills enough people to have a fuss but not enough for long term economic damage. Justifies the PLA intervening, yet leaves the region relatively unharmed once the occupation is complete and the virus contained.

But I think that assuming it's a bat transmitted virus is just the hypothesis that requires the least unproven premises.
