There are real (mission-relevant) consequences though. That's why I watch their work. They speak at conferences or are placed on expert panels and influence or even decide STEM policy/program decisions. They have support networks that will attack you for criticizing their advice/proposals.
When they're involved with (scientific) payload teams, they don't necessarily harm the experiments themselves (they don't contribute), but they create drama and I've seen projects blow up or delayed over it.
