Hey guys. Recently, I showed some interest in CS in front of a CS-major friend, and asked him for some recommendations on what to read to get into the subject.

He recommended me pic related. I Googled it a bit, but some people are calling it a "masterpiece." I know the very basics of computer science, but I want to know whether or not starting with this as my semi-introductory book will be possible? I want to understand CS very rigorously, though. I want to know the ins and outs of it. I just don't know whether or not this is a good starting point.

I've done up to calc 3 math + linear algebra etc.

What are some mathematically-inclined programming books?

I already know a "decent" amount of Java from taking some required CS courses (two programming courses, plus a data structures/algorithms course) that were required for my math major at my university. These were OK, but they were very light on mathematical discourse, even the algorithms class, and I never really liked programming in Java to be honest.

I want to approach programming and computer science from a mathematical perspective, but I don't know of any good books that take this approach. Language-wise I would prefer python, but I'd be open to other languages.

It pic related a good place to start? From what I understand it doesn't use an actual language, but instead Knuth's own assembly generic language or something.
