OP here. Addressing some comments.
(1) Diet: I had a junk food addiction which I cured. I lost a lot of weight, going from obese (bmi 30) to normal weight (bmi 23).
(2) Exercise: I walk a lot but never done anything more taxing than cardio.
(3) Activity/energy level: I have a hard time doing things and am bored almost all the time.

Unlike black holes there's not much talk going about this.
In a nutshell, if black holes are like punctures in spacetime, these things are like cracks in spacetime.

These are some facts I could gather about them:
>a cosmic string is extremely thin (near 1D) but very long (spans across the universe).
>a cosmic string is extremely massive. 1km is as heavy as earth (and remember, their length spans across the universe)
>a cosmic string moves extremely fast, loops around itself often and obviously causes gigantic gravitational waves as it does so
>at least one is predicted to exist in our observable universe.

How fucked are we should these things exist? They could literally slice through a galaxy and wreak havoc, scatter all its stars thus completely destroy it. Imagine if it sliced through earth though?

Imagine if you were on board the Challenger and you were informed of the problem 1 second after liftoff, knowing full well that you were going to die and there was absolutely nothing you could do to stop it.

I messed up, please tell me how to fix my brain guys. I always watch youtube videos with at least two times normal speed, sometimes even more than 3x if someone is talking particulary slow. This of course took some time to get used to but after a couple of years this just feels very natural to me. But since I got so used to it I can't just focus on my teacher talking about anything in normal speed and my mind eventually drifts away. Now with corona I am luckily in a position where I can just play the video he recorded faster because all my lectures are at home anyways but I fear that I have permanently fucked up my brain.
I would like to keep the processing speed I have trained up though because it is really convenient, I just want to be able to listen to normal paces and not loose focus when someone makes a 2 second break between two sentences (this is of course a little overexaggerated but I usually do loose focus when someone speaks slowly for more than 10 minutes)

Guys I accidentally said something racist in class, what do?

>data analysis class
>doing analysis on data sets that detail performance on a math test for middle school kids for schools of varying backgrounds
>each individual is measured in the following variables: age, sex, race, socio-economic background, middle school grade, test score
>were discussing the results of our analysis with prof
>prof notices some schools have a very positive skew for test scores, asks why
>lots of people start answering things like socio-economic background and age even if there is little no corretalion between positive skewness for test scores and those variables
>in my analysis, race and positive skewness have a correlation of .89
>point this out without thinking about it
>class goes silent
>prof laughs and says something like "well but that cant be it" and goes on
>after class I get a text from the 2 girls in class asking me why im racist

Wtf should I do now? I just wanted to do data analysis, im not racist and I dont care for politics at all!
Should I do other analysis to try to find an alternative explanation for the positive skewness?

SHIT SHIT SHIT. Do you know what causes overractive immune responses? If your guess was "stress", like say, locking down an entire city at gunpoint, then you would be CORRECT. Why tf is this being handled in mass containment units?!?!

mathlet here

I was trying to integrate e^(-x^2) from -n to n

I considered e^(-x^2-y^2) instead over [-n, n]^2 and did the switch to polar coordinates (x, y) -> (r, theta) calculated the jacobian
And ended up with

e^(-r^2) r dr dtheta

However, what the fuck do you do with the limits ?
Is this where math fails? I can't represent a square with polar coordinates or some shit?
Its easy to approximate with the circle inside the square and the smallest circle which contains the square but
I have never actually seen any discussion of this in any text books, or heard any professors mention this shit. It's just been informal handwaving how to get the new limits for the integral
I mean, are you even allowed to do the transformation if you can't represent the domain approriately?
