The technology itself is relatively simple, the only reason why it is not proven is environmentalist concerns and cheap fossil fuels. If we ever begin to run out of fossil fuels, then those go out the window and nuclear reactors will be quite easy to build.

Also, with breeder reactors, there is enough uranium and thorium to last longer than the Sun.
