New age assholes misusing Sagan for their pseudoscientific agenda boils my fucking blood.

Will science one day solve every problem?

STEP ONE:
Make a list as best you can about what arguments they are making against your stance. Don't worry, it shouldn't be too long, as these debates tend to just repeat themselves using different language / approaches.
Remember to throw out any that don't directly relate to the topic at hand (in your case, evolution).

STEP TWO:
Sort these arguments down to their base components (again, many will simply be repeated arguments), and determine what kind of logical fallacy they are making.
Easy example - "If humans evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?"
This would be (I think, its been a while since highschool debate club) a Hasty Generalization Fallacy, because it draws a conclusion off of a small sample or incomplete idea of the topic.
Simply point out how evolution REALLY works to them, be as specific as possible.

STEP THREE:
Do that for every relevant argument they have, own the debate like a boss.

Hey /sci/. Can you point me toward some good lectures (maybe even audiobooks or a DECENT scientific podcast of sorts)? Nothing that would require my complete, undivided attention.

Don't worry. Here's some delicious Sagan instead.

1. If you think you can blow through some of these courses, try surveying them instead of full enrollment. This way you can get a good overview of whats expected or has changed since you went to college last, and not have to worry about attendance / homework etc.

2. If the college you go to is more up to date on technology, fuck textbooks. I'm taking some pre-reqs right now at a community college (an underfunded one at that), and basically everything you need is put up by either the teacher on the school site, or is fairly easy to find online using various tools.

3. Alright bad news time. Unless you BLOW PEOPLE THE FUCK AWAY with your performance / knowledge pre-grad, it's going to be hard as hell getting into grad programs.
Yeah academia sucks balls, its getting better, but very very slowly, particularly in the hard sciences.

Anyway it goes, good luck man! Everybody should be looking to improve themselves, and knowledge is power.

One of my math teachers did something similar before I got my BA. She knew my circumstances (one of my parents died very suddenly after my midterm), gave me an extra attempt at my final that covered the most BASIC concepts in the class.

She knew I was really nervous before she graded it, so we walked to the bar near the school and she bought us both a couple of Shiners. She graded it at the bar, I passed with an 87. She wished me luck in life and shook my hand when I graduated.

She always seemed like one of those cold, bitchy women, but my respect for her species went up by a lot.

Scientific books to read over the summer, /sci/? Not really looking for textbooks or anything of the sort, I plan on actually treating this break as a vacation. Physics or chem would be a plus.
