Then again a lot of things could go wrong, and rather than a gradual evolution to post-scarcity utopia, there could be large numbers of people suddenly left unemployed and with no income, leading to upheavals, revolts, perhaps induced scarcity by corporations ("patents and copyrights") to protect their bottom line, and accompanied by government surveillance to enforce it. Rather than gradual evolution we could have chaos from too rapid change on one hand, or official resistance to change on the other, derailing the idea of a gradual process.

And what of our automated factories and the complex AIs needed to make them work?
How far along the intelligence scale would our AI progress?
At which point will it become slavery? At what point will they demand "rights"?

Certainly, it is something we will have to address in the next 100 years.
