I cannot agree, however I know nothing except my field (condensed matter). I also do theoretical physics so I never had more than 4 authors in a paper (except some quasi-review but its meh and has 0 citations). so no really any office politics there (only once, on my 1st paper that was essentially my masters thesis I got shifted to 2nd of 3 authors because previous PhD student of my supervisor needed a 1st author publication for the grant finalisation).

As for granting systems we only have "more diversity" in the situation that e.g. min.40% of grants have to go to women, so usually that all the women that apply for something.

As for the post doc situation there is plenty of places to do so, in germany and italy they really need some people because ~70% of phd graduates go to tech as you might earn 4-5x as much there. I dont know whats happening in GB, I guess with brexit all shit is on but even here, at my university, we just 3 months ago employed a guy from GB (he had postdocs in US, 2x germany, france though).

Sidenote: my girlfriend does experimental physics in and she has some cooperation with US based team and really is terrible (she also told me about similar things to what you just wrote). Her friend was in US working for some team and it was terrible as well.
You are beeing treated like a slave, no free weekends, no time for your own projects etc. just work. This sucks and is in no way beneficial for scientific idealism (or even producing new ideas). They even steal ideas in the same groups and do not share experimental results, its idiocy, I dont know what happens there but seriously its corrupted.
Is it true also for you and your coworkers ?
Again Im speaking only about my field.

As for publish or perish, no doubt its everywhere. Thankfully my co-supervisor is workaholic and pushes me to do the same but in friendly manner. I also try to get insights/explanations from whoever I meet, it helps in writing papers a lot.
